Age 82 Of Battle Creek Died Monday, February 12, 2007 at her residence after a long illness. She was born January 12, 1925 in Battle Creek to Donald M. and Rhea S. (Sullivan) Bivens. She graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1943. She worked for Michigan Bell Telephone Co. in Battle Creek of 32 years, retiring in 1982. She married Robert C. Hayward on June 27, 1948, at the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years on November 28, 2001. Surviving are a son, Michael Charles (Mary Ellen) Hayward of Galesburg, two grandchildren, Tracie Lynn (Randall) McGuire and Michael Chad Hayward; and a great-grandson, Blake Randall McGuire. Shurley has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 60 years; active in the Telephone Pioneers of America and a member of American Legion Post #54 Auxiliary. She was a volunteer at the Battle Creek VA Hospital and was a member of Battle Creek Central Alumni. She enjoyed her family, friends, her ! cat, playing cards, reading, collecting dolls and small lighthouses, traveling and feeding the birds and wildlife in her yard. At the request of the family, friends may call after 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the FARLEY-ESTES & DOWDLE FUNERAL HOME 105 Capital Ave., NE where they will be received 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday and on then Thursday 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 16, 2007, with Dr. Jeffrey S. Carlson officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church, Humane Society-Calhoun Area or Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Care.
