Tekonsha, Michigan Age 86, passed away November 28, 2004 at Battle Creek Health System. She was born May 2, 1918 in Tekonsha, Michigan, the daughter of Arah W. and Nellie A. (Shedd) Shumway. She married Ned A. Martinson October 2, 1941 in Tekonsha. He preceded her in death July 22, 1985. Mrs. Martinson was a lifelong resident of the Tekonsha area. She was a high school Home Economics teacher, then an elementary school teacher. Mrs. Martinson taught for 24? years, and 21 of those years were in the Tekonsha School District. She retired in June 1977. She also was a dedicated farm wife and mother. Surviving are 3 children, Susan (Mrs. Roger) Lewis of Battle Creek, Jerry (Kandith Kowalski) Martinson of Coldwater, Nancy Carman of Kalamazoo; 4 grandchildren, David (Tracy) Martinson, Daniel (Jen) Martinson, Kristi Carman, Terra (Mrs. Mic) Depew; 3 step-grandchildren, Mrs. Penny Huss (Dennis), Chris Lewis (Laura), Tim Lewis (Nichole); 6 step-great-grandchildren; 1 step-great-great-grandchild. She was p! redeceased by her husband, Ned; 4 siblings, Ned Shumway, Carl Shumway, Alta Greene, Marion Shumway. Irma graduated from Tekonsha High School in 1935 and from MSC, now known as Michigan State University. Irma attended the Union United Church Of Christ, Tekonsha. She was a member of the Women's Fellowship, a past member of the Tekonsha Research Club and the Calhoun County FCE. She was an avid gardener, reader, quilter, kept up to date with world happenings and especially loved her family. Visitation Tuesday, November 30, 2004 from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. at Putnam's of Tekonsha. Services will be Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Union United Church of Christ, Tekonsha, Pastor Barbara Pryor officiating. Burial Riverside Cemetery, Tekonsha. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Tekonsha Scholarship Fund. Arrangements are by Putnam's of Tekonsha, 517-767-4114, Tekonsha, MI Published in the Kalamazoo Gazette on 11/30/2004.
