July 21-1933, page 1. MRS. A. E. HOLLAND STRUCK BY TRAIN Fatal Accident Occurs at Ingham St. Crossing of M. C. Mrs. Albertina E. Holland, 79 years old, of 704 East Erie street, was instantly killed at 9:50 this morning when she was struck by a westbound Michigan Central train, the Wolverine, at the South Ingham street crossing. Mrs. Holland, who lived at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry C. Dunton (UNREADABLE,BLACK LINE THRU IT) crossing, was struck as she was walking to the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. William Robinson, just north of the tracks on Ingham street. She apparently failed to see the fast approaching train before crossing the tracks and because of affected hearing, is believed not to have heard the train or the crossing signals until too late to avoid the accident. According to Mrs. H. C. Blair, East Erie street, a witness of the tragedy, Mrs. Holland hurried her steps just as she reached the tracks, indicating that she noticed the train just before she was struck. She had nearly crossed the tracks when the engine of the train hit her and she was thrown away from the train to the sidewalk north of the crossing. Justice Harold B. Weeks was called in the absence of a coroner and after an investigation gave the opinion that death was due to concussion of the brain, shock and possible internal injuries. He decided that the death was accidental and no inquest will be held. According to witnesses, the train, which usually does not stop in Albion, was traveling at a reasonable rate of speed and several times prior to reaching the crossing, the engine's whistle was sounded. The train was preparing to stop at the station here for a Chicago passenger and was stopped in a remarkably short time after the accident. Mrs. Holland had made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Dunton for 16 years. She was the widow of the late Zinria Holland, of Albion, whose death occurred 20 years ago. She was born in Morenci, but had spent practically all of her life in Albion and vicinity. She was a member of the Congregational church of Morenci. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Herbert B. Hastings of Napoleon, Mrs. Dunton of Albion and Mrs. Forest Gilmore of Jackson; three sons, Claude Holland of Brooklyn, Avery Holland of Napoleon and Arthur Holland of Grass Lake; and two grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at the Marsh funeral home at 4:30 Sunday afternoon with burial in Riverside cemetery.
