Age 91 Of Kalamazoo Formerly of Battle Creek Died June 3, 2004 at her home in North Palm Beach, Florida. She was born December 23, 1912 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Edward A. and Adelaide (O'Shea) Poat. Her parents moved to Battle Creek when she was four and she attended Battle Creek schools, graduating from Central High School in 1931. She went on to the University of Michigan, where she received her Bachelor's Degree in 1935. Ruth married William V. Bailey on July 10, 1935 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. They settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts while William got his Master's Degree from the Harvard Business School and then in Ann Arbor while he got his Law Degree from the University of Michigan. They then settled in Battle Creek, except for the years during World War II when they were in Detroit. After the war, William concentrated on his law practice and was a three time mayor of Battle Creek. Ruth was busy raising their three children, Joan, Lyn and William Jr. After the children grew up, Ruth and her husband trave! le! d the world extensively. Among other things, they traveled around the world three times. During that time, they wintered in Hawaii for many years, and then in Scottsdale, Arizona. Ruth's beloved husband, William V. Bailey, died May 5, 1980. Their only son, William Jr., preceded him in death in 1971. Ruth moved to Parkview Hills in Kalamazoo in 1985 and in 1998, she started spending her winters in Florida. Ruth had a talent for writing, enjoyed traveling and gardening. She read continuously and had a fine appreciation for music and art. Her husband and her family were the center of her life. She was a very generous lady, full of wisdom, humor, good spirit and a zest for life. Most of all, she was through and through, a lady. Surviving are her daughters, Joan B. Firman of North Palm Beach, Florida, and Evelyn B. (Lyn) Whitehead, of Fayetteville, North Carolina; her sister, Dorothy P. Pell, of Melbourne, Florida; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The Reverend Joy E. Rogers will officiate. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery immediately following.
