Carrie had a brother, Edgar (b. 1855, d. 1860). I'm descended from a brother to John's father, James (b. 1801). -- One last note. I have always had an inkling that Matilda may have first been married to a cousin to John, David W. Laberteaux. David (b. 1823) married a "Matilda ? " in 1848. If Matilda Shumway was born abt. 1832, as the 1880 census record suggests, then she would have been 16 or 17 years of age at the time of this marriage. There was one child (Demetrius) who died at two and a half. David then died in 1852.
