Of Battle Creek Died Friday, October 8, 2004 at Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo. Nelson was born November 11, 1915 in Battle Creek, the son of Rolland S. and Gussie M. (Winters) Taft. He was a lifelong resident of Battle Creek. He worked for Kellogg's for 35 years retiring in 1980. Nelson also was a volunteer fireman for Lakeview fire department. He was a member of the Kellogg 25 year club, he liked working in the yard, fixing cars, cutting wood, spending time at the lake and helping his family. He was united in marriage to the former Virginia A. Wiard who preceded him in death in 1990. Surviving are two daughters, Muriel (Preston) Jeurink of Allendale, MI, Joyce Thorson of Kalamazoo; 7 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren; four brothers, Russell Taft, Sr. of Battle Creek, Wendal (Jeanette) Taft of Ft. Myers, FL, William (Lois) Taft of Lansing, MI, James (Mary) Taft of Battle Creek; two sisters, Marian Young of Battle Creek, Delores (John) Kenny of Mason, MI; two sister-in-laws, Ruth Wi! llis of Ypsilanti, MI and Valetta Wiard of La Mesa, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Irwin Taft and sisters, Eleanor Stumpf and Maxine Groesbeck. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 11, 2004 at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home with Pastor Philip D. Kok officiating. Family will receive friends Sunday from 2 - 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, American Cancer Society or Charity of Choice. Published in the Kalamazoo Gazette on 10/11/2004.
