Age 80 Of Portage and Formerly of Battle Creek Betty passed away Thursday, September 30, 2004 at home. She was born May 24, 1924 in Corvallis, Oregon, the daughter of Heman E. and Ellen M. (Griswold) Babcock, and was a 1942 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. Betty was a bookkeeper for 30 years, first with Babcock Bottled Gas and later at Zande Apothecary. She married Walter C. Hemry June 17, 1961, and he survives. Also surviving are her 5 daughters, Kay (David) Mitchell of Battle Creek, Karn (Bill) Cunningham of Mattawan, Cindy (Chris) Schweitzer of Battle Creek, Sherry Hemry of East Leroy, and Nancy (Tom) Chandler of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Tony Mitchell, Brian Mitchell, Amy McCleery, Andrew Schweitzer, Ryan Chandler, Tara Harrell and Lucy Cunningham; 4 great-grandchildren; sister, Geraldine Schrock of Battle Creek; and several dearly loved nieces and nephews and many kind and loving friends. She was preceded in death by 1 brother and 2 sisters. Betty's family was everything to her. Her other passions in! cluded gardening, bird watching, oil painting and reading. Additionally she was a most outstanding and talented seamstress. At the request of the family they will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. Sunday at the FARLEY-ESTES & DOWDLE FUNERAL HOME 105 Capital Ave, NE Battle Creek Memorial Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Rev. James Roberts officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Greater Kalamazoo or American Cancer Society.
