I'm also interested in a list of folks who died or lived at the County Home (Poor House or County Farm?) from about 1868 to 1900. I'm okay with mailing list for Calhoun. I'm guessing at the possiblity of a John Reese who must have died circa 1870, presumably in Calhoun County MI. No death certificate can be found. One place you might check is _THE POORHOUSE STORY_ (http://www.poorhousestory.com/) _http://www.poorhousestory.com/_ (http://www.poorhousestory.com/) _http://www.poorhousestory.com/MICH_calhoun_county_poor_farm_Hist.htm_ (http://www.poorhousestory.com/MICH_calhoun_county_poor_farm_Hist.htm) It was also called the County Almshouse. There's a picture of the farm (drawing) on one of the web pages for Calhoun, Michigan. Unfortunately, I don't see a list of residents. Really quite sad but better than no shelter. One statement from an old historical document that somewhat bothored me was a reference to "Ten children were taken from the almshouse to the State school at Coldwater, twenty-five in all having been so disposed of since the establishment of the school." "Disposed of"???? Not a lot of sensitivity, for certain. My mother lived for a few months in an orphanage in Coldwater in the early 1920s. Her parents both died when she was a toddler. She was not insane or handicapped; she just didn't have parents. Later the orphanage became a home for children with special needs, to use the current (and more respectful, I think) term of today. I have a Welthy (Wealthy) Coston who died there Oct. 8, 1901. I am assuming she is buried in their cemetery - are there cemetery records ? Please e-mail your response direct to me - I signed up for the mailing list but didn't receive the acknowledgement and haven't received any mail yet.
