Information courtesy of Sharon Warner, Homer Index. Evelyn M. Butters, 81, of Homer, died Wednesday, December 1, 1999, at Battle Creek Health System's Leila Site. Mrs. Butters was born November 17, 1918, in Traverse City to Leon C. and Inez (Hoxie) Hammontree. She married Francis S. Butters July 24, 1937. He preceded her in death in 1989. She worked at Doris Grocery, Bascom Grocery, Young's IGA and Felpausch in Albion for 25 years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the West Eckford Missionary Church. She was a foster grandparent at Homer Elementary School for several years and enjoyed crafts and gardening. Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Purucker of Battle Creek; a son, Frederick (Joyce) Butters of Homer; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Hammontree of Boyne City and Jerry Hammontree of Homer; and six sisters, Phyllis Winnick, Betty Parker and Jean Rauch, all of Homer, Margaret Carolan of Sage Lake, and Marcia Butters and Doris McWatters, both of Homer. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Butters was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Hammontree, and a son, Richard F. Butters. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 4, at the West Eckford Missionary Church, with the Rev. David Nichols officiating. Interment was in Albion Memory Gardens. Funeral arrangements were handled by the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association.
