Information courtesy of Sharon Warner, Homer Index. John A. Evans, 79, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, September 29, 1999, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. Mr. Evans was born December 12, 1919, in Jerome to Evan and Julia (Bird) Evans. He graduated from Addison High School in 1939 and worked on several farms in the area, then worked for the Hillsdale County Road Commission for 30 years. Mr. Evans married Wanda Whalton May 7, 1941, in Hillsdale, She survives. He was a member of the IOOF Lodge #555 and Rebekah Lodge #134 of Litchfield, the Fred Rogers Encampment #25, Patriarchs Militant #43 and a long-time member of the Litchfield Congregational Church. He loved to fish. In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Robert (Ginger) Evans of Del Ray Beach, Florida, Thomas (Maudie) Evans of The Woodlands, Texas, and Donald (Lyle) Evans of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Sally Young of Rolland, and Juanita Kies of Hillsdale; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 2, at the Litchfield Congregational Church with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. Funeral arrangements were handled by the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
