The oldest relatives in this line Frederick J. Riever born 18 Jul 1854 in Germany. All I have is "Germany", no town or providence. His mother was Wilhelmina Schmidt, but no father's first name. Wilhelmia probably would have been born about 1830. His wife was Willamina Lindo b. 24 Jan 1855 in "Germany" daughter of Frederick Lindo. We may be able to connect some day back in Germany. She was born in Los Angeles, CA on September 23, 1916, the daughter of Maurice and Kate Miller. After the death of her parents she was adopted by James and Mary Redner of Battle Creek and at the age of four traveled by train to join her new family. Kay graduated from Lakeview High School in 1934 and was recently named to the "Honored Alumni Hall of Fame". Kay earned a scholarship from the National Campfire Girls Association due to her involvement in the arts and community service to attend Mills College in Oakland, CA, majoring in Art. She graduated there in 1938 and then continued her studies at the California School of Fine Arts until she moved with her first husband George Tooby to Wisconsin in 1939. While in Wisconsin, Kay's painting, "Osgood Place" was accepted as one of 308 works out of 4,812 submitted by America! n artists, for the Carnegie Institute exhibit entitled "Directions in American Painting" held in Pittsburgh, PA in 1941. This exhibit was for new artist's that had not exhibited before and her "little oil painting" was selected and sold. Divorced in 1942, she returned to Battle Creek where she met and married Karl Randels. A renowned artist and muralist, Kay was an original founder of the Art Center of Battle Creek. She was actively involved in the Kalamazoo Institute of Art and many national organizations. She studied and worked on various art mediums throughout her life and believed strongly in the importance of art education in the schools. Kay designed and created the murals at the Calhoun County Building in Marshall, the children's area at Willard Library and many other works throughout Michigan. A book about Kay's work was published in 2005, and was followed by a reception and exhibit in her honor at the Art Center of Battle Creek in 2006. Kay was a longtime active me! mber of First Congregational Church and served on local, state and nat ional boards for the United Church of Christ Council. She was also a founding member and first president of the UCC National Ladies Fellowship. She was preceded in death by her parents and nine brothers, husband Karl in 1991, who had been former Superintendent of Lakeview Schools; daughters, Sarah "Sally" Randels in 1993 and Susan Randels in 2001. Kay is survived by a son, Bruce (Carol) Randels, Battle Creek; four grandchildren; Ben (Erin) Randels, Scotts, MI, Adam Randels, (fiancé MarCharia Henderson) Oxford, MI, Benjamin (Michelle) Moen, Pewaukee, WI, Kathryn Moen, Chicago, IL, and one great-grandchild. Also surviving are special nieces and nephews Laura Redner Walters (Richard "Craig"); Kerrie Redner; Boyd ("Skip" Redner, III), and Keith H. (Jane) Redner, II, in addition to many other relatives and friends. Visitation will be at First Congregational Church, 145 Capital Avenue, N.E., in the indoor Fellowship Courtyard on Tuesday, March 25, 2008, beginning at 10:00 AM foll! owed by a memorial service in the church at 11:00 AM. Private burial will follow at a later date. He was born December 26, 1947 in Kalamazoo, MI, the son of Albert Russell and Martha Tilda (Jensen) Taplin. Terry served in the U.S. Marine Corp. during Vietnam where he received four Purple Hearts and a Silver Star. Following his service with the Marine Corp., he graduated with high honors from Kalamazoo Valley Community College. He then served with the City of Portage Police Dept. where he received an additional purple heart for injuries sustained in the line of duty. He retired in 1985, after 15 years of service. He then was employed at the U.S. Post Office in Battle Creek, until retiring in 2003. Terry is survived by wife of 27 years, Linda Lee (Daniel) Taplin of Battle Creek, MI; son, Travis (Teressa) Taplin of Chicago, IL; step-son, Stephen (Dulce) Verdon of Chino, CA; step-daughter, Kristin (Richard) Willavize of Olivet, MI; on! ly surviving sibling, sister, Joyce Bowers; grandchildren, Noah, Kylie and Rebecca Taplin, Julian Verdon, Preston, Skylar and Lee Willavize; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was the owner of Battle Creek Christian Book Store, until he was forced to close it due to his illness. When he closed the store he donated thousands of books to missionaries all over the world. He loved his pets, the outdoors, camping, fishing and vacationing in the Upper Peninsula. Memorial services will be held Friday, 11:30 AM at the Ft. Custer National Cemetery with Rev. Dr. B. Mason Shambach of Westlake Presbyterian Church, officiating. Age 48 Of Miami, FL Formerly of Battle Creek Died Friday, March 21, 2008 at Baptist Hospital in Miami. He was born July 15, 1959, the son of Mary K. and Anthony J. Swanchara. Dan was a 1977 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. After graduation he moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and became a heating and cooling specialist. He eventually married and resided in Florida for 10 years. He went through a divorce then moved back home to Battle Creek. It was good timing as later that year he would lose his older sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Nuelken, suddenly to a heart attack. Then six weeks later his dad passed away. Dan went on to living a clean life and in January had celebrated 19 years of sobriety. During that time he was instrumental in leading others to sobriety. He started his own construction business "Building Your Dreams Into Reality". That is how he lived his life and encouraged others to do the same. Dan became a loving caregiver for his mother during her battle with Alzheimer's disease. During this time Dan! also remarried and became a step-father to Andrew, Ashleigh, Allison and Andrea. He was very involved in their lives and a loving father figure for them. His face would light up whenever he spoke of them. He was very proud of each of them. After a second marriage failed, Dan decided to move back to Florida. He loved to be by the ocean and enjoyed everything about it, especially sailing and the beach. He was currently working at an air force base on a construction contract. On Good Friday, Dan was stricken with a heart attack. His family and friends will miss him dearly but his memory will live on with them forever in their hearts. He was also preceded in death by his loving mother, Mary K. Swanchara; beloved aunt, Lottie Kujawa and close brother-in-law, Paul Nuelken. He is survived by two sisters, Nancy (Jack) Weber and Mary (Phillip) Allen; two brothers, David (Elizabeth) Swanchara and Anthony (Virginia) Swanchara; 12 beloved nieces and nephews and 12 great-nieces and nep! hews. The family will receive friends at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home, 703 Capital Avenue, S.W. That said, I note Belle died on June 4, and that her death is indeed recorded in Calhoun County Deaths, vol. 3, p. 163. I will try to send you this as an attachment.     3. The reason that the date is listed as 01 Jan 1903 is that the Barry County on line records do not give the actural date of the marriage. You would need to write to the county clerks office for a copy of the marriage record. Would it be okay if we added your email address to the record as a reference for other researchers? Then Belle died 6/3/1904 of tuberculosis but there is no record of her death in Barry County nor Calhoun County even though she is buried in the Newton Cemetery in Calhoun County.
