Have you tried Michigan State Library? According to a site online the records for two Burlington Cemetaries are listed there. I can't tell if the date (see below) means that the records start in the 30's or if it means they were placed in the files then. Worth a try. Sage. His father, Michael first appears in East Bloomfield, Ontario, New York in the 1860 census. He is recorded as 19 years old and born in Canada. By 1870 Michael is residing in Emmet, Calhoun, Michigan. He is recorded as 28 years old and married to Elizabeth who is recorded as 25 years old. They list no children at this point. In the 1880 census for Emmet, Calhoun, Michigan, Michael is now recorded as 38, a carpenter and married to Libbie (Elizabeth) who is recorded as 34 years old. Carl has now been added to the family and is recorded as 2 years old. Jumping ahead a little we see Carl C. Sage getting married to Mary E. Sallows on 9 FEB 1898 in Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan. He states that he is a machinist, 21 years old, his father is Michael and his mother is Elizabeth Hamlin. Mary, age 18, is the daughter of George Sallows and Catherine McDonald. Even though I have not been able to find a divorce record for Mary and Carl, I did find that Carl was back living with his parents as recorded in the 1900 census. He is listed as single. Then on 9 MAY 1906 Mary is getting married to Sherman Budd in Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan. On 22 JUN 1907 Carl married Anna G. Wheelock in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan but they evidently did not stay there long for in the 1910 census we find Carl, Anna and a daughter, Dorothy, living in Convis, Calhoun, Michigan. Dorothy is recorded as being one year and one month old. The date of the census is 22 APR 1910. Carl must have been visiting his parents when the 1910 census was taken because he is also recorded with them. Now, as we shall see, things get a little strange. Anna G. Wheelock Sage marries Corty J. Whitney on 7 MAY 1917 in Battle Creek. And, Carl has one more chance at marriage. He married Mrs. Grace Wells Whitney on 22 NOV 1917 in Battle Creek. Grace Wells was the former wife of Corty J. Whitney. See what I mean? The last bit of information that I have is that Corty and Ann have living with them the three children of Carl and Ann: Dorothy, age 10, Harold, age 9 and Kenneth, age 7. This is from the 1920 census for Albion Township, Calhoun County, Michigan. I have not been able to find Carl or Grace after their 1917 marriage. I would appreciate any help in documenting the divorces of Carl C. Sage and locating where he and Grace went to following their marriage. Contact me if you wish the documents that support the above. I do have documentation of their marriage found in the Democratic Exponder-dated Mar. 1, 1855 and William's age was not listed. However, it mentions that William was of LeRoy, MI. Also the 1860 MI census that lists Nathaniel and Eddie as William's kids conflict as finding my Lydia Jane Porter in Taylor Co., Iowa in 1870 show the Porter kids listed as Loyd N. and Ada C. So the 1860 MI census has mispelled Eddie (should be Ada) and the Nathaniel is actually Loyd Nathaniel. I have tracked Loyd Nathaniel and found his wife and also the death date and place for him in Salt Lake City, UT. Maybe his obit. will shed some light on his father. I also thought of a split between William and Lydia Jane but can't confirm that. I'll continue my quest and hopefully find something. Thanks again for your in put. If this could be found it would list his age, an important clue to proceeding. In the 1850 Census William L. Porter, 39, is found with wife #1 Roxana, and five Porter children. Just as you found in 1860 Lydia Porter, spouse-less, with among others children Nathaniel and Eddie Porter, I notice in 1860 in Battle Creek a Wm Porter, age 49, born NY, living with his daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Samuel Hyde and two other Porter children Franklin, 19, and Theodore, 17. This would seem to describe a situation where William Porter's #2 marriage has broken up and the split spouses-both living--have divided the children between them. Of further interest, I find in the 1870 Census, a listing in Independence, Missouri for this same William L. Porter, age 59, born NY, with sons Charles F, 29 (an age match for Franklin, which was probably this son's middle name), and Tho W, 27 (an age match of Theodore), both born in Michigan. This seems to track William to Missouri to age 59 where I leave it to you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. As a derscendant of Alma Stiles Boswell's son Frank, I would be interested in obtaining a picture of his stepfather. To the best of my knowledge, Edwin did not father any children of his own, but there could be other relatives with more claim to the photo. (If there are, I hope they would contact me so that I could get a copy of the photo.) I'm also interested in contacting any other relatives out there. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Edwin VANWINKLE which was taken at the Tait's Gallery in Battle Creek, Michigan. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1860's with Edwin appearing to be in his 30's at the time the photograph was taken. In addition to his name, someone has also written "son of John VANWINKLE" on the back of the photograph.
