DAVID JOHNSTON, another of that sturdy band of pioneers, whose ranks are so rapidly being depleted, passed away on Friday evening at his home in Hall's Addition after a prolonged illness, at the advanced age of 80 years, 10 months and 11 days. Deceased was a native of England; but came to America when quite young. He crossed the plains to California in 1850. Mr. Johnston followed mining and other pursuits for several years when he again returned East and remained until 1868 when he came to this valley where he has ever since resided and until old age prevented conducted his farm. "Uncle Dave" as we were all pleased to call him was universally honored and respected for his happy, jovial disposition, and we doubt if the old gentleman had an enemy on earth. He was univerally courteous and kind to all. Within the past seven months, eight of the pioneer residents of this section have passed away. One by one are they leaving us, and soon the old path-finders; those who blazed the way and laid the foundation for this magnificient commonwealth will have all passed from the earth. But not so with their memories. They have been embalmed in acts of bravery and deeds of charity and will live on through the years to come. An aged widow is left to mourn his demise. They had shared each others joys and sorrows for many a year, and now that the separation has come, how lonesome the intervening time when she too must join him in the great beyond. To each and every one must the summons come, whether in the morning, noon or even'tide of life, to the prince or pauper, the great leveler of all mankind places on all on a common level. Two daughters, MRS. C.W. MOORE of Pacific Grove and MRS. G.K. DeFOREST of this valley, several grand-children and many friends survive him. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon, Rev. N.M. Parsons conducting the services at the late residence of deceased. The attendance was very large. --LASSEN MAIL, Susanville, California, Tues., 28 April 1908, Pg. 3, Col. 3 1910 U.S. CENSUS, TOWNSHIP NO. 1 HALL TOWN PRECINCT, LASSEN CO., CA, 28-29 April 1910 Johnston, Caroline (Head), 75, b. DAVID JONNSTON [JOHNSTON], one of the pioneer women of this valley, familiarly and lovingly known to almost everyone in this section as "Aunt Cal.", died this morning about five o'clock. Although in feeble health for some time past, she was thought to be improving in strength, and her death was unexpected at this time. At this writing it is impossible to obtain data for a fitting obituary, and that matter will have to be deferred. The funeral will take place from the late residence of the deceased in Hall Town Sunday, February 26, at 2 o'clock p.m. --LASSEN ADVOCATE, Susanville, California, Fri., 24 February 1911, Pg. 3, Col. 2 SUSANVILLE CEMETERY, SUSANVILLE, LASSEN COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Johnston, David - b. 13 June 1827 - d. 24 April 1908, n/o England Johnston, Caroline A. - b. 23 January 1835 - d. 24 February 1911, n/o England Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
