She was a loving mother, wife, sister and grandmother. Born September 8, 1929 in Battle Creek, she was the daughter of the late Bennie and Margaret Wickens. She married Robert C. Carroll on September 4, 1948, at Percy Jones Hospital and they were happily married for 60 years. Mary attended Battle Creek Public Schools and was employed at Security National Bank, Robinson's Department Store, Leila Hospital, Debicks Drug Store, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mary also helped build and manage Williamsburg Apartments along with her husband, Bob. Mary enjoyed wintering in Sarasota, FL, writing, bible studies, cooking, crafts, enjoying the company of many friends, and decorating for every holiday. Most of all she loved being a parent and ! grandparent and spending time with her family. Mary was always a very warm and generous person, full of life and spirit. Mary is survived by her husband Robert Carroll; daughter, Debra Morse and husband Charlie; son Thomas Carroll; granddaughter, Laura Taylor and husband, Larry; grandson Tyler Morse, all of Battle Creek; brother David Wickens and wife, Connie of Lansing, MI. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Bennie and Margaret Wickens of Battle Creek and a brother Ben Wickens of Lansing, MI. Her family is grateful for all she gave to us, her incredible energy right to the end, teachings of God, strong moral character, and devotion to all of us. The family would be honored to receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM, Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the FARLEY-ESTES & DOWDLE FUNERAL HOME Battle Creek. Mary's life will be celebrated 11:00 AM, Thursday, April 30, 2009 at the First Wesleyan Church, 14425 Helmer Road South with Pastor Robert Zuhl, officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Formerly of Battle Creek Went to be with her Lord, March 30, 2009 in Kennesaw, GA with family by her side. Westa was born March 15, 1934 in Battle Creek, MI, the daughter of Gairold (Babe) and Golda (Goldie) Minier Sharpsteen. She graduated from Battle Creek Central High School. On January 24, 1954 in Battle Creek, MI, Westa was united in marriage to Kenneth D. Kemerling. She was a faithful member of several Methodist churches throughout her life including Birchwood United Methodist and First Methodist in Battle Creek. Westa worked at Michigan Loan Co. and later Kellogg Co. for 20 years. Upon retirement, she and Ken lived in Mt. Dora, FL, then Auburn, AL, later moving to Kennesaw, GA to be near their daughter and her family. Westa's greatest joys were caring for her family and home always placing their needs in front of her own. She lived life as an example to others always compassionate and never judging. Her loving spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband, K! en; two children, Ronald (Anne), of Kalamazoo, MI and Rhonda (Terry), of Acworth, GA; four grandchildren, Whitney and Brian Kemerling, Erin and Kelsey Royer as well as special family friend; Candace Hawk among other close friends and relatives. Westa was preceded in death by her parents, Gairold and Golda Sharpsteen and a brother, Pherold. Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be held 1:00 PM Monday at the funeral home. He was born September 28, 1925 in Kalamazoo, MI, son of Frederick J. Dykens and Helen M. Dykens (Brady). He is survived by his devoted wife, Ruth Eileen Dykens (Carey); and three children, Joan Dykens, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Mark (Deb) Dykens, Battle Creek, Michigan, and Cheryl (Robert) Winegar-Schussler, Tampa, Florida; He is also survived by five grandchildren, Darren Dykens, Derek Dykens, Danielle Dykens, Laura Winegar-Rich and Jamie Winegar-Suarez; and five great grandchildren, residing in Florida. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Barb Dykens, Kalamazoo, Michigan; and four nieces. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and received a B.S. degree in Business from Western Michigan University, where he was a charter member of Delta Sigma fraternity. He enlisted and served in the United States Coast Guard! during World War II as a Radarman in the Pacific. Richard retired from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company of Battle Creek after 20 years of service, where he was Sales Manager, and received numerous awards and recognitions, including Salesman of the Year. During his career, he belonged to the National Association of Life Insurance Underwriters. Prior to Met Life, he worked for Standard Oil for many years. For the past 18 years, Richard and Ruth Dykens have spent winters in Fort Myers, FL, where he served on the board of his retirement community. Richard was an active member of the Knights of Columbus #8440 in North Fort Myers, FL, Loyal Order of the Moose #2199 in Cape Coral, FL, American Legion Post #298 in Battle Creek, MI, and St. Jerome Catholic Church in Battle Creek, MI. Richard enjoyed having fun with family, golfing, dancing, traveling, cooking, swimming and the water, and the Tigers. Richard was a devoted and loving family man who loved his grandchildren and will! be missed deeply by all his family and friends. Age 87 Of Indian Lake Formerly of Battle Creek Passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday morning, April 5, 2009 at the home of her son in Battle Creek. She was born July 26, 1921 at Indian Lake in Vicksburg, Michigan the daughter of Cecil and Evelyn (Munn) Butcher. Ellenore was a 1940 graduate of Lakeview High School. On August 2, 1942 she married Max G. Davis and they lived in Battle Creek until the retired to Indian Lake in 1983. Ellenore had worked at Cricket Publishing and Barney's Glass. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and days at the lake. She also enjoyed reading, crafts, calligraphy, flower gardening, baking, jigsaw puzzles, playing cards with friends, hosting parties at the lake and volunteering. Ellenore was involved in the Lakeview PTA as president. She was a longtime member of the Vicksburg Library and the Ladies Library of Kalamazoo. She was active at the Vicksburg Historical Society's Train Depot, and she and her husband were members of two dance clubs in ! Battle Creek. She was a member of the Shamrock Extensions Group, Schoolcraft Presbyterian Church, and was a longtime member of the Indian Lake Association. Ellenore was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Max on August 26, 1987 and her sister, Roberta Frances Davis. Surviving is her sister, Chrystle "Happy" Aurand of Tucson, AZ; son, Roger Davis and fiancé Phyllis Marshall of Battle Creek; daughter, Lynn (Larry) Jackson of Williamsport, PA; four grandchildren, Garren Katz of Seattle, WA, Nichole Hamilton of Brunswick, GA, Lance Davis of Brandon, FL and Kellie Davis of Battle Creek; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held 10:00 AM Thursday in the Chapel at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Paula VanderHoven officiating. The family will receive friends at the Richard A.
