    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jojo6174 Surnames: Briggs, Brown Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.calhoun/2277.2.2.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Karen, My Peleg BRIGGS was a very rough person. He was a Michigan Sharpshooter and was known for his ability to gamble. He also raised race horses for a short time after he moved from Michigan. I've heard only a few stories about his early life in New York and Michigan. I know that he was married 3 times. He had a family with the first wife, but not very much else is known. He changed his name and married a second time and did not have children with her. His third wife was a sister of the second wife and the sisters apparently smoothed his rough edges. I believe that he moved from Michigan and changed his name to have a new life. Very little was ever said about his old life. I believe that he died when his oldest child (my grandmother) was a teenager and all of the stories from him have been third-hand, so I don't know how much is true. I accidentally found his brother's obituary (I found it on Ancestry while doing a newspaper search.) Nobody in the family knew of his ! brothers. I had assumed that he had severed ties with his first family when he ran away. The family story is that he came from New York when he was about 12. At that time, he was the size of a full grown man. When he was in Michigan, he came across a new grave of a boy about his age. He found the family and asked if they needed help on the farm since they had lost a son. The other family took him in and raised him. There are a few possibilities of who this family may have been. I have been trying to find this family to see if they can fill in any more details of the story. I have been looking for a Miles or Anson BROWN in the Calhoun area or the Montcalm area. The boy that died would have been born around 1840 and died around 1850 is my best guess. I don't know if the boy's name or his father's name was Miles or Anson. I have found a few good leads of Browns that were on the same page of the census as Peleg's brothers. There have been a few rumors about being Indian. From your information, I am assuming that your rumors indicate that the 3 Briggs brothers would be full Cherokee. That would make my grandmother 1/2 Cherokee and 1/2 English. She had darker blond hair with a hint of red and unusually clear, light blue eyes. I don't know if this would be genetically possible. However, Peleg and Cora didn't seem to fit into a mostly white society in the mid 1800's, so this might be a reasonable explanation. Another interesting piece of information, Cora's sister Dora was living with an aunt and uncle on one census. I haven't traced the name of the aunt and uncle, but I am guessing that they are from the mother or step-mother's side of the family. My Grandmother and her Brother would have been 1st cousins with Cora Belle, but I don't believe that they ever knew about her. I have looked up some of your pictures online and compared them. I do believe that there is a resemblance with my great uncle. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
