You are clearly the research leader on this family. Most of the things I found online about the Watkins and Sullings families of Vermont and Batavia could be traced back to you. I've found the same sorts of secondary, compiled sources that you have, (e.g. "Part First Gazetteer and Biographical Record of Genesee County, N.Y. 1788-1890", ed. F.W. Beers; "Our County and Its People, A Descriptive and Biographical Record of Genesee County, New York", ed. Safford E. North; and the "Combination Atlas Map of Genesee County" which you referenced and which I hadn't found until you led me to it.) but I haven't dug out the primary source records on church membership and wills that you have. I started casually looking online to try to verify things in my family history and was surprised when I didn't seem to be able to. I've been working with handwritten family records and compiled secondary sources which I've found online. Regarding the Presbyterian church records you have saying that Temperance Sullings joined in 1832 and Susan Ann Watkins joined in 1833. Are there records for any of the other Sullings or Watkins children? i.e. Is Susan Ann Watkins the only one shown joining or are the rest of the family there as well? That might be another indication of whether she's part of the family or a coincidence in names. A bit more on what I have. According to the diary written by her son, Wm. H. Stone, Laura Angelia (Watkins) Stone died 28 Nov. 1879, which fits with her having been one of the three children who was alive in 1876, but died before 1887. Also, you mentioned an obituary of Temperance's which said that she was survived by "two sons and three daughters" and said that you had "other sources" which let you calculate who the five were. I have a transcription of what may be a different obituary which gives the names of the surviving children: "The survivors are Ruth M. at home, Mrs. Benedict, Marshall, Michigan, Mrs. Smith and Dr. H.S. Sullings of Kalamazoo, Michigan and David Sullings on the home farm." A perfect match for your info. I also have clippings of obituaries for Frances Adelia (Sullings) Smith and her husband Alexander Smith. Let me know if you'd like copies. The references to Sullings/Watkins family in the Wm. H. Stone diary include the following: "Grandmother Sullings (Temperance) died June 18th 1887 in her 98th year having lived seventy years on the Bushmill farm" Oct. 1887 "Aunt Ruth and cousin Alice Sullings came and stayed until the 5th" (Note that Wm. H. Stone, and his family lived in Portland, Michigan so a visit from Batavia entailed a journey of more than 350 miles. That sounds like family to me.) There are also references to visits from Aunt Ruth in 1890, 1897 and Aug. 1907. Jan. 7, 1888 "Alice Sullings married to Chas. Campbell" Besides the diary, Wm. H. Stone kept family and genealogy records in the same ledger. They include the following: "Aunt Louisa Benedict born Jan. 3, 1812 Died at Marshall Mich. April 20th 1897 Frances Sullings born in Batvia N.Y. Jan 7th 1823. Married Alexander Smith Sept. 15th 1852. Died at Vicksburg Mich June 2, 1901 Uncle Nathan Benedict died at Marshal [June 27] 1905 Nathan Benedict born at Walton N.Y. 1809" (The "June 27" above is a correction of the original which says "in August or the fore part of September".) I have no records of Louisa having been married previously to a Prentice, but if the message board infomation giving their wedding date as 9 Jan 1842 is correct, she would have been 30 years old - old enough to be a widow. Do you have a firm date for William Watkins' death after the family moved to Batavia? I haven't found one anywhere, but the best information I have says that Laura Angelia Watkins was probably born in Batavia in 1818. Thanks for all the info you posted. I'm enjoying exploring this. I confess that I'd rather find a family connection than run into the "probably an orphan" wall. I have a daguerrotype of Laura and she's quite lovely. Hope this hasn't been too long. This assignment was not solid but based on census information, 1820 and 1830, a book titled "Combination Atlas Map of Genesee County, New York Compiled, Drawn and Published from Personal Examinations and Surveys Everts, Ensign & Everts 714 & 715 Filbert St., Philadelphia 1876" and reads as follows "TEMPERANCE HULBERT, was born in Brandon, Vt., June 22, 1791, married William Watkins April 2, 1811. Came to Batavia 1817. Soon after was left a widow with three children. October 5, 1819, was married to WM. Sullings. Joined the Presbyterian Church in 1832. Of her eight children seven are living. With her daughter Ruth, she still lives in the "Old Home," and through 85 years have brought to her their sunshine and shadow, their joys and sorrows, her mind is as active as in youth, and her step elastic. Not "idly waiting," but cheerful and busy, looking forward to a happy re-union with the loved ones "gone before." and a First Presbyterian Church of Batavia New York record that indicated that a Susan Ann Watkins joined with the church on 24 November 1833. The book established that Temperance had three living children by William A. Watkins and that she joined with the First Presbyterian Church in 1833, a year before the church record said that Susan Ann Watkins had done so. It appears from the 1820 and 1830 census of the William Sullings household that the three Watkins children were one male and two females when excluding the known ages and sex of the Sullings children. I have no information about who the second daughter of William A. and Temperance (Hulbert) Watkins was or what happened to her except that she must have died between 1876, when the book published and 1887 when Temperance died since Temperance's obituary says that she was survived by two sons and three daughters. I know from other records that the surviving children wer! e Henry Sullings, David Sullings, Louisa B (Watkins) Prentce/Benedict, Ruth Sullings and Frances Adelia (Sullings) Smith. I could easily be wrong about the name second Watkins daughter. It has bothered me for sometime that I was never able to find her as an adult. If your family has photos of William and Temperance Sullings there is a good chance she was the second daughter of William and Temperance Watkins, there were no unexplained children in the 1820 and 1830 Sullings census so I doubt that your Laura Angelia was an orphan living with William Sullings. I also know that none of the Watkins children were named in the wills of William or Temperance Sullings so there is no help there. Evidently Temperance corresponded with a Watkins niece Nancy J. (Watkins) Salisbury at times who I believe was a daughter of Williams brother John. In later years Nancy's sister Sarah A. Watkins lived with her family and is buried with Nancy and her family in Barre New York. Sarah A and Susan A may have been the same person. My great-great-grandfather was Julius the oldest son and first to die of William and Temperance (Hulbert) Sullings. I would be very interested in working to understand the connection of Laura Angelia (Watkins) Stone to Temperance (Hulbert) Watkins/Sullings. I have been to the place of burial for the parents of Temperance in Sugar Hollow, Vermont and the graves of Sullings family in Batavia and have copies of the Watkins - Hulbert marriage record from Rutland County Vermont. Author: mstone1968 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.calhoun/1398.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am interested in the Watkins and Sullings descendants of Temperance Hurlburt, who married first William Watkins in Vermont, then moved to New York where William Watkins died and she married Williams Sullings. She had three children by William Watkins: Susan, William and Louisa, and five children by William Sullings: Ruth, Frances Adelia, Julius, Hervey and David. My interest is along a somewhat different line. My GG Grandfather, Elijah Janes Stone (born VT, 1813), married a woman named Laura Angelia Watkins in Batavia, NY about 1835. They moved to MI before 1840. I have a number of family records which indicate that their son, William Harvey Stone, believed his mother, Laura Angelia, to be the daughter of Temperance and William Sullings. However, my research has accounted for Temperance's eight children and Laura Angelia appears not to have been one of them. So I am interested in learning more about who she was and why my family thought that she was a member of Temperance's family - either Watkins or Sullings. I suspect that she may have been an orphan, possibly from William Watkins family, who grew up with the Sullings children. Many of the references to Sullings and Watkins family members are in a handwritten diary kept by Wm. Harvey Stone between 1897 and 1908 which documents marriages, deaths and visits. I can provided details for anyone interested. I also have photographs of Temperance and William Sullings, and of their daughter, Ruth.
