    1. [MICALHOU] The Mystery of the Death Certificate - Calhoun County, Michigan
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: suzyfrtz Surnames: KNICKERBOCKER, ALDRICH Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.calhoun/4405/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Posting this in the hope that someday, somewhere out there, someone can help me solve this Knickerbocker mystery. My research centers in the Knickerbocker families of Calhoun County, Michigan. Two of these gentlemen, William M. Knickerbocker and his nephew Myron R. Knickerbocker, have bios in the History of Calhoun Co., Mich., which tells us that William M. and John H. (father of Myron R.) were sons of Hugh Laurens Knickerbocker and Rachel Scram/Schram of Dutchess Co., New York. John settled in Genesee Co., NY, where he died in 1829, and William went there to take care of his farm. Then. both William and Myron settled in Calhoun Co., Mich. in the 1830's. Next, I have our relative, Silas Knickerbocker, born New York State about 1808, parents yet unknown. Silas married Lucy Aldrich in Ontario County, NY, in Dec. 1827. Silas and Lucy's parents came to Macomb Co., Mich. about 1833. Calhoun Co. and Macomb Co. are located in different parts of Michigan. Silas and Lucy had three children who lived to adulthood, Theopholis, Albert, and Lucy. Silas and Lucy were divorced Feb. 4, 1850; the divorce was in Washtenaw Co., Mich., where Silas married a widow, Marietta Perkins nee Hopkins on Feb. 13th and both were in Marengo Twp., Calhoun Co. Mich. in the 1850 census. (Lucy remained in Macomb Co.) Silas and Marietta had one daughter, Ida, born 25 Jan. 1852 in Marengo Twp. Silas died in Sheridan Twp., Calhoun Co., 4 Aug. 1875. Now for the mystery, and we go back to Myron of the first paragraph. Myron and his wife Sara Waldo had a son Charles, born 1853 in Albion, Calhoun Co. Charles' death certificate (died 29 Nov. 1829, died Albion) lists Silas Knickerbocker, b. NY, and "Marian" ie Marietta, b. NY as his parents. I have confirmed that this Charles is Myron's son. Why is Silas' name on his death certificate? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. In this case, it appears to be a home for the aged, that started in Marshall, MI; then was bought by the United Brethren Church and combined with an 'old folks home' in Charlotte; then lastly, Dulcenia was sold to the Assembly of God church. Anyone who can Google can find this out. As a tip: type in "Lane-Dulcenia Homes" and see what happens. The article refers to her parents as Mr. and Mrs. Freed, and it also mentions that Gracie was an only child. Gracie had a sister, so she wouldn't have been an only child unless fanny had died before her. There's no death certificate on file, either. It's very frustrating because I haven't been able to find anything on Julia or Fanny. Thank you so much for your information. The website you provided me is very helpful. They are living in a boarding home, and the census was as of June 3. The census in Michigan was taken June 1 and 2. It's conceivable that they could actually have been both places. However, probably someone gave the names and they actually were in the other place. This is not uncommon to find. Samuel J. Freed 36 Julia F. Freed 32 Gracy Freed 7 Fanny Freed 2 Also, I was going to tell you about the Goodson Family Tree that has info on the Freed, but then I noticed a posting by you. I looked on www.seekingmichigan.org to see if there was a death record for a Fanny who had a father named Freed, but didn't see one, so I would think maybe she left Michigan. I'm wondering if Julia died and then he married Minnie. You might want to look in the Wisconsin records. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
