Was told he was adopted and the 1900/1910 census seems to bear this out as it lists his father as beind born in Portugal, and his mother as Ireland. I took photos of all of Samuel and Hannah's family buried there. They are posted on Findagrave.com. Feel free to check them out. I have found out that Cyrus Crandall married Sarah Maria Crandall, and she died and is buried with her mother and probably her father and a sister in Dubois Cemetery in Calhoun County, MI. I found Samuel's signature on probate records in October of 1882, as he received a portion of a life insurance policy for Sarah Maria. He was listed as living in Barry County, MI, as he had several sons living in that area. This, however, is the last I have seen of him at this time. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RichardAvery001 Surnames: Avery, Brand, VanWyck, Stanisz, Topley Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.calhoun/2263.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Gordon and Elizabth had two children -- Gordon and Helen. I have not been in touch with either for many years and, as I am 66 and they were both older than me, it is possible both are deceased. Gordon Chauncey Herman Avery married a second time. The given name of the second wife was Gladys but I don't know her maiden name. She is also deceased and they had no children together. Gordon Chauncey Herman Avery was born in Toronto and after his retirement from Canada Post, he and Gladys eventually moved to the small town of Campbellford, Ontario. Gordon Chauncey Herman Avery was the eldest of four children born (all in Toronto) to Harry Herman Avery and his wife, Bessie Violet Brand. Their second born was Elmer John Avery (deceased); their third child was William Henry Brand Avery (my father, deceased Jan. 1, 1982) and finally Daisy Eileen Avery (who married Gordon McCullaugh and had two children -- Joan and Ann). Daisy and Gordon are both deceased; the whereabouts of their two children are unknown to me but Ann was last known to have been living in southern California. Harry Herman Avery was born in Upstate New York in the village of Lebanon, not far from Syracuse. He came to Toronto in the late 19th century or very early 20th century, but why decided to emigrate to Canada and the exact date, are unknown to me. Of interest, Bessie Violet Brand, wife of Harry Herman Avery, came to Canada with two sisters. They were all born in England and placed in an orphanage after their mother died and their father was unable (or perhaps unwilling) to care for them. They came to Canada as part of the Barnardo Orphans program. Elmer John Avery was also married twice. He had at least two children with his first wife, their first being Elmer John Avery Jr. His other children (and how many of them there were) are unknown to me. They eventually divorced and Elmer remarried some time later but had no children with his second wife. If it is of interest to you, here is some additional information about my father, William Henry Brand Avery. He was born in Toronto on March 30, 1912. He married Madaline VanWyck on Sept. 10, 1941. I (Richard VanWyck Avery) was born Feb. 10, 1944 and my sister, Jane Madaline Avery, was born Sept. 10, 1947. Jane married David Grant Ross in May, 1970 (I forget the exact date) and they had three daughters (Jennifer, Heather and Catharine), all now married with children of their own. I married Mary Lorraine Nicholle on Aug. 4th, 1970. We had one child: Tracey Nicholle Avery, born Aug. 26, 1972. Nicholle is married to Mark John Stanisz and they have three children: son Matthew William; twin daughters Emily Avery and Sarah Katharine. Currently, Matthew is 11 and the twins are nine. I hope this has been of some interest and use to you in your family research. If you have other questions, please post again and I will do my best to answer. All the best Richard Avery Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My connection to this family is through marriage. My Aunt Elizabeth Ann Topley married Gordon Chauncey Hermann Avery in 1933 in Toronto. Gordon died May 16, 1984 in Toronto. His wife Elizabeth died Mar. 6, 1938 she was my father's sister and she was born in Wales. I don't know here Gordon was born, do you? Look forward to hearing from you. I had begun to find SOME of that documentation after I did my posting but not nearly as much. I never found the 1930 census record, for instance, nor several of the marriage records, and only an incomplete listing of one of the marriage records. I did find the cemetery records for the family at the genweb archives for Calhoun county (Riverside Cemetery, Albion) but I never did find Mary "Polly" Drumm's record. (B. 1811--d. btw 1880-1890?). She was the mother of Peter Drumm and lived with him in 1880, but she was not on the 1900 census, nor in the Riverside cemetery where one of the daughters who died before 1900 is buried, suggesting she died before the family moved to Albion. I suspect she's buried at whatever cemetery is closest to Sheridan in Calhoun County, but that cemetery has apparently not been transcribed and put on-line. Are you descended from this family? If so, it's a cousin of yours I'm trying to help-Mike Garrett. His mother was Shirley Drumm, a daughter of Rex Edward Drumm. Mike's been a good friend of mine for 10 years now. Again, thank you very much! Cecilia Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
