Gould Battle Creek -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Passed Away: 01/12/04 Publication Date: 01/14/04 Chester M. Gould, 92, of Battle Creek, died Monday, January 12, 2004, at Heartland Health Center in Battle Creek. He was born May 6, 1911, in Newton Township, the son of Myron and Edna (Russell) Gould, and was a lifelong area resident. He attended Graham Lake School, and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1929. On December 23, 1937, Chet married Aileen M. Johnson. He worked as a Tool and Die Maker at the old A.B. Stove Company, Oliver Manufacturing, and several other area companies. From 1963 to 1979 Chet worked at Eaton Manufacturing in Marshall, retiring in 1979. Chet was a member of Sonoma United Methodist Church. He was a former member of Harper Creek Optimist Club, and Harper Creek Schools Planning Committee. He was a longtime member and former chairman of the Newton Township Planning Commission. Chet enjoyed fishing, vegetable gardening and reading. He will be remembered by his family for his love of family gatherings, and his sense of humor. Surviving is Aileen, his wife of 66 years; and sons Chester M. (Kimberly) Gould Jr., Gilbert D. (Louise) Gould and Montie R. (Linda) Gould, all of Battle Creek. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Russell Gould. At the request of the family, friends may call after 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 16, 2004, at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2004, at Sonoma United Methodist Church. Internment will follow at Morgan Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

Joe graduated from Lakeview High School and received his bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University. After college, he was a member of the Air National Guard serving in the firefighting unit. Joe was an investor in numerous successful enterprises in Michigan, Kentucky and Florida. Locally, he owned the M-66 Bowl and formerly owned the Bellevue Drive-In. Joe married Julie L. Burton in Boca Raton, Florida in 1991. She survives. Also surviving are his sister, Jane M. Cox; nieces, Catherine Anne Cox, Elizabeth Jane Cox and Emily K. McDonough. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Sarah J. Redner. An avid horseman, Joe was Whipper-in for the Battle Creek Hunt Club and competed in hunter-jumper classes in AHSA shows throughout the Midwest. He also competed in the Jumper Grand Prix in Madison Square Garden. His later involvement w! as centered in racing, from quarter horses to pacers. His successes included Annie's Surprise, Glider and especially Jate Lobell, the 1986 World Pacer Champion. Joe was a member of the US Trotting Association and the Michigan Harness Horseman's Association. He also held memberships at the Battle Creek Country Club and the Pine Tree Country Club of Boynton Beach, Florida. A memorial service will take place Saturday, June 26 at 12:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, Battle Creek with Rev. Dr. David H. Young, officiating. Interment, Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may go to the American Stroke Association or the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Shirley M. McCluskey. They then settled in Battle Creek, except for the years during World War II when they were in Detroit. After the war, William concentrated on his law practice and was a three time mayor of Battle Creek. Ruth was busy raising their three children, Joan, Lyn and William Jr. After the children grew up, Ruth and her husband trave! le! d the world extensively. Among other things, they traveled around the world three times. During that time, they wintered in Hawaii for many years, and then in Scottsdale, Arizona. Ruth's beloved husband, William V. Bailey, died May 5, 1980. Their only son, William Jr., preceded him in death in 1971. Ruth moved to Parkview Hills in Kalamazoo in 1985 and in 1998, she started spending her winters in Florida. Ruth had a talent for writing, enjoyed traveling and gardening. She read continuously and had a fine appreciation for music and art. Her husband and her family were the center of her life. She was a very generous lady, full of wisdom, humor, good spirit and a zest for life. Most of all, she was through and through, a lady. Surviving are her daughters, Joan B. Firman of North Palm Beach, Florida, and Evelyn B. (Lyn) Whitehead, of Fayetteville, North Carolina; her sister, Dorothy P. Pell, of Melbourne, Florida; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
