I have a Wealthy Tuttle who died in Marengo - the County Home Infirmary in 1901. Does Calhoun Co. have any cemeteries indexed with people buried that might be on line or could do a lookup? Thanks.

I will bet that Riverside Cemetery has been copied, but is it online anywhere? I just found out that ancestors are buried there and I'd like to have the cemetery record for documentation. Sarah Sweeney Fitch, for one, and I suspect others. Diane Hettrick [email protected]

I'm also interested in a list of folks who died or lived at the County Home (Poor House or County Farm?) from about 1868 to 1900. I'm okay with mailing list for Calhoun. I'm guessing at the possiblity of a John Reese who must have died circa 1870, presumably in Calhoun County MI. No death certificate can be found. One place you might check is _THE POORHOUSE STORY_ (http://www.poorhousestory.com/) _http://www.poorhousestory.com/_ (http://www.poorhousestory.com/) _http://www.poorhousestory.com/MICH_calhoun_county_poor_farm_Hist.htm_ (http://www.poorhousestory.com/MICH_calhoun_county_poor_farm_Hist.htm) It was also called the County Almshouse. There's a picture of the farm (drawing) on one of the web pages for Calhoun, Michigan. Unfortunately, I don't see a list of residents. Really quite sad but better than no shelter. One statement from an old historical document that somewhat bothored me was a reference to "Ten children were taken from the almshouse to the State school at Coldwater, twenty-five in all having been so disposed of since the establishment of the school." "Disposed of"???? Not a lot of sensitivity, for certain. My mother lived for a few months in an orphanage in Coldwater in the early 1920s. Her parents both died when she was a toddler. She was not insane or handicapped; she just didn't have parents. Later the orphanage became a home for children with special needs, to use the current (and more respectful, I think) term of today. Trying to figure out how the surname "Pierce" fits into my family line. The first Pierce connection seems to come with Mary Williams Reese - the wife of John Reese (Jr.). He died and she remarried someone by the name of Maloney. In the 1900 census, for Burlington, Calhoun County, Michigan, Mary is enumerated with a Luther PIERCE as a servant. Mary was 59. Her daughter, Grace, was listed as "Grace MALONEY" and is age 17 although I believe Grace's biological father was John REESE. It's possible that at some point Mary might have married to this Mr. Pierce - I don't know. I didn't write down anything more about him at the time I was researching. But, back at the name "Pierce" again ... Mother told me about a gentleman named PIERCE who came to visit her (Mom) with his wife around 1961 or 1962. I vaguely remember him - he was quite big and I think (not sure) that he lived in or around Battle Creek. I know he was somewhat upset that she knew very little of the family, but, she was orphaned in early childhood. The "Mr. Pierce" who came to visit Mom is now deceased. Mom does remember that there were two brothers by the last name of Pierce and one of them had the first name of "Pete." She couldn't remember the first name of the other one. They were cousins somehow to her adoptive father, Asa LAZARUS. She thought the PIERCE cousins might have been a connection somehow through the REESE side but she wasn't sure. Does anyone have any insight into the PIERCE REESE LAZARUS connection? Thanks Sheryl Houston, Texas
