King is a nephew to John Paxton's first wife and a relation to me. Carrie is his second wife. I found them in Marshall Twp 1900 and 1910 Census with another puzzle. 1900 Census lists James and Carrie with one child born and one living, daughter Elsie 6. 1910 Census lists them with TWO children born and TWO living, Elsie 16 and Harry 13.
I'm getting in on the disccusion a bit late here but ... I am from a STOUT line from NY believed to be of English descent. Francis STOUT b. 1800 Hunterdon, New Jersey, married Rhonda WISNER who was b. about 1805 in NY. Francis died in Lenawee County, MI in 1884. Francis and Rhoda had 11 kids: Eunice b. circa 1823; Julia Ann b Jan 22, 1826; Mahlon b. Dec. 25, 1829 near Buffalo, New York & married Nancy Melissa FAILING Aug. 31, 1851 in Marshall, Clarendon Twnshp, Calhoun County, MI (mine); Arwinilla b circa 1831, Milton b circa 1834; Manson b circa 1836; Francis b. circa 1837; Elizabeth b circa 1839; Sarah b circa 1841; Alonzo b circa 1843; Clarissa b circa 1849. There is not a Laberteaux on my list yet but there may have been an intermarriage with a Stout descendent somewhere. Francis STOUT's (b. 1800) father appears to be Zebedee STOUT b. July 6, 1770 in Hunterdon, NJ. Zeb died March 25, 1850 in Niagara County, NY. Zeb's wife was Eunice "Nucy" HAGAMAN. I have a record of 7 kids: John, Francis, Benjamin, Sarah, Arminda, Isaac, Seneca. The father of Zebedee STOUT per my records was Benjamin STOUT b. 1745 who married Elizabeth ANDERSON. My records show 3 kids: Zebedee, Grace, and William. Benjamin appears to have served in the Revolution. While I do not see a Dutch connection in my direct Stout + ancestry, there was definitely a German connection. Since they lived around an area that had a lot of Dutch influence it's quite likely that some of the descendents did intermarry with Dutch. There are other, unrelated Stout lines though, including the German Stouts (Staughts and other spellings) who settled originally in PA. On the other hand, with PA & NY next door to each other it's entirely possible that the two different lines did move other the state lines and settle. It appears that my line started out in Hunterdon, NJ, and moved from east to west across the mid section of NY finally landing in Niagara County (see above) and then Lenawee County, MI and then some into Calhoun County. There appears to be a record of Zebedee Stout living in Schenectady, NY. Zebedee STOUT is on the "Jury List Romulus, Seneca Co., NY 1804" on _ww.rootsweb.com/~nyseneca/rom1804.htm_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyseneca/rom1804.htm) However, there is another Zebedee Stout, I believe, who was a Quaker in Indiana, I believe, so it's a bit hard to distinguish between the different lines even though Zebedee is an unusual name. Carrie had a brother, Edgar (b. 1855, d. 1860). I'm descended from a brother to John's father, James (b. 1801). -- One last note. I have always had an inkling that Matilda may have first been married to a cousin to John, David W. Laberteaux. David (b. 1823) married a "Matilda ? " in 1848. If Matilda Shumway was born abt. 1832, as the 1880 census record suggests, then she would have been 16 or 17 years of age at the time of this marriage. There was one child (Demetrius) who died at two and a half. David then died in 1852.

In the 1870 MI census, Matilda and Carrie (age 9) are residing on a farm in Calhoun Co. with a farm hand, John Paxton. The 1880 census lists her as married to John Paxton. In this census she is described as: age 48, wife, keeping house and "sick with consumption". John & Matilda are buried at the Hotchkiss Cemetery in Marshall Township. The only further notes I have for Carrie are that she was one of only two family members present at her 97 year old grandmother's funeral in 1900, Pleadus Coleman Laberteaux. She married a James P. King Oct. 12, 1887 in Calhoun Co.

Hi, I'm about 90% convinced that James Cummings likely came from Onondaga County, NY. Quite a few of my Cummings kin moved from Onondaga out to Calhoun County in the mid-1800's. My guess is that he is probably the brother of my 3G-Gfather Willard Cummings who later settled in Convis. If I'm correct, then his father would be Asher Cummings (b. 1799 CT), although there were a few other Cummings families living in Onondaga/Marcellus NY area, all descended from Oliver Cummings, born in Ashford CT. Also, I don't have all my records with me right now, but I seem to recall a sibling James Cummings of that family who was written up in some sort of History of Calhoun County book that I ran into at one of the genealogy libraries. I do know for a fact that that James Cummings did descend from Oliver Cummings of Onondaga. Hope this helps some. If you want more info I can provide it once I get to all my records.
