He is in Indianapolis in the 1900 census but listed back in Battle Creek in the 1905/6 and 1907 city directories. He is not listed in 1908. I have not yet found him in the 1910 or 1920 censuses. His parents (William P. BOSWELL and Alma J. STILES Boswell VANWINKLE) were buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. Is he there, too?

    3. you must have had a lucky day with the clerk........ and yes they are closed in many many michigan counties even if over 100 years the issue in michigan is mute... it already exists.... sad but true ----- Original Message ----- From: Renee O. Well, actually, they are not closed if they are over 100 (I believe that is the cutoff) years old. You can also get them if you can prove the person is deceased. I did that with my brother who only lived one day. 3. >From another list I am on: "HR10, which was mentioned in the 13 October issue of RootsWeb Review, has passed out of the U.S. House of Representatives and is now part of S.2845. The amendments suggested by David Rencher in his letter to the bill's sponsor, Congressman J. Dennis Hastert, were NOT incorporated into this legislation. Thus, the terms of HR10 will now be considered by the Senate, as part of S.2845. If S.2845 becomes law, as now written, family historians will face some real challenges in attempts to obtain birth records, even on long- deceased individuals. Specifically, what genealogists need to do is suggest to their lawmakers the addition of Sec. 3061(b)(1)(A)(iii) that would read: "who is alive on the date that access to their birth certificate is requested." This addition would clarify that the legislation (soon to be law) applies ONLY to birth certificates of CURRENTLY LIVING PERSONS. If you do not know your U.S. Senator's e-mail address, you can find it at http://www.senate.gov/ This bill can be found online at http://thomas.loc.gov/ Put in S.2845 (in the bill number window) and then select item No. 3; and go to Subtitle B--Identity Management Security; Chapter 2-- Improved Security for Birth Certificates."

Mr. Baum resided at Bronson Place in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Ed was born on November 15, 1908 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, to Joseph S. and Alice (Leonhardt) Baum. From Sheboygan the Baum family moved to Escanaba, Michigan, then to Duluth, Minnesota. In 1923 the Baum family moved to Battle Creek, and Ed Baum graduated from St. Philip High School in 1925. In 1929 he graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. After graduation Ed went into the sign-painting business and worked for Roy Steinbacher at the National Electric Sign Company. After two years he was laid-off and then worked for Bill Sweet's shop where he made signs, show-cards, etc. before he went into business for himself, and did all the movie signs for the Butterfield Theaters. Several years later he began working! for the Prudential Insurance Company as an agent, and worked for Prudential until he started his own general insurance agency in 1946. Mr. Baum was active in community and civic affairs and served as president of the Battle Creek Community Chest in 1951; as president of the Battle Creek Exchange Club and as a member for 46 years; as a member of the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners; as president of the Battle Creek Magic Club. He entertained audiences with chalk cartooning for 35 years. Three generations of Ed's offspring and their friends fondly remember the shows he did in schools, for community associations, and for his grandchildren and their friends when he visited married children following his retirement. Oil painting was another hobby of Mr. Baum's until he lost his eyesight to Macular Degeneration. As a member of St. Philip's parish, he was active in the Legion of Mary and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. For many years he was the captain of the men's retreat g! roup, and arranged annual retreats at his alma mater, Notre Dame. He w as also an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus. Ed Baum married his first wife, Helen Grace 0lson, in 1932. She preceded him in death on November 2, 1941. In 1946 he married Zelma Nielsen, who died in 1996. Surviving are his five children, Edward (Ana) Baum Jr. of Huntington Beach, California, Helen Casper of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, James Baum of Battle Creek, Michigan, Mary Ann (Gene) Haakonson of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Jack (Jacki) Baum of Carol Stream, Illinois. Against incr! edible odds, he held his family together after the death of his first wife in 1941.
