The community of Lakeside (Chikaming Twp) was once known as Wilkinson. "LAKESIDE, Berrien County: John W., James, and Joseph WilkinOSn, brothers and natives of Virginia, built a pier and a sawmill here in 1854; when the Chicago & Western Michigan (now Pere Marquette) Railroad came through in 1858, the place was given a station named Wilkinson; because of the alleged southern sympathies of the Wilkinsons in the Civil War, it is said that the post office department frowned on the name for its post office and the name of Lake Side was adopted from its location on Lake Michigan; John S. Gibson became its first postmaster on June 23, 1874, with the spelling changed to Lakeside since June 11, 1894." From the book "Michigan Place Names" by Walter Romig. Thank you, Steve. Now I don't have to dig thru my references for the book title! That was my main goal this morning! This is the exact article to which I was referring. I had seen the actual book about 4 years ago at a friend's house when visiting in Saugatuck (my hometown). My father was one of the Gotham's of the fishing tug sinking in 1943. Incidentally, there is a museum in Saugatuck on the Mt. Baldhead side of the river that is doing a great exhibit of shipwrecks, etc. this summer. Hours are from 1-4 daily, in case anyone is interested.- Caroline From: <stevegerm@provide.net> To: <MIBERRIE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 02, 2002 20:23 Subject: Re: [MIBERRIE-L] Wilkinson CITY?? > The community of Lakeside (Chikaming Twp) was once > known as Wilkinson. > > "LAKESIDE, Berrien County: > John W., James, and Joseph WilkinOSn, brothers and > natives of Virginia, built a pier and a sawmill here > in 1854; when the Chicago & Western Michigan (now > Pere Marquette) Railroad came through in 1858, the > place was given a station named Wilkinson; because > of the alleged southern sympathies of the Wilkinsons > in the Civil War, it is said that the post office > department frowned on the name for its post office > and the name of Lake Side was adopted from its > location on Lake Michigan; John S.
