COLLINS, FIRST WARD ALDERMAN 12 YEARS, DIES ON SUNDAY. John Detample, of 257 Second street passed away Sunday afternoon, following a long period of illness, though death was quite unexpected, the invalid not having complained more than usual. He is survived by a widow and a nephew, Charles Christ, who has been like their son, having lived with them since the age of two years. There are also three sisters of deceased. Mrs. George Muth and Mrs. Gus Koerber of Bainbridge, Mrs. Henry Fritz of Dowagiac, and two sisters who died several years ago. Mrs. John Kibler of St. Joseph and Mrs. Richard Haid of Bainbridge. Mr. Detample was the first chief of police of Benton Harbor. He served as deputy sheriff with Fred B.Collins during his official life as sheriff of Berrien county, and was Benton Harbor's first ward alderman for a period of twelve years. Kind, aggressive, with a strong personality, Mr. Detample's public life in this city and county was noteworthy. He had the friendship of many, who will regret his death with more than passing sympathy and interest. Deceased was a prominent member of the Elk and I. O. O. F. lodges. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, under the auspices of the B. P. O. E., at the Elk temple. The body will lie in state Wednesday afternoon from 1 to 3 o'clock, at the temple, where friends may view the remains. F. A. Hobbs will render the solo at the services. Burial will be in the family lot at Crystal Springs cemetery. Rev. T. W. Bellingham will officiate. Mr. Detample was born in Bainbridge December 16, 1852, and was married in 1876, to Miss Carrie Macher of Bainbridge.
