    2. I am interested in finding the cemetery where Ida Kratz (one year old) is buried. At the time of her death, 18 Mar 1882, her parents may have been residing in Sodus MI, even though information I have seems to indicate they always lived in the Avery/Three Oaks/Weesaw Twp part of the county. Her parents were Henry and Barbara "Kate" Kratz. Any suggestions who I might contact for a record of this Berrien County burial? Or, is it possible there might have been an obituary for her death, and which library would be most likely to have a copy? Thank you. Marcia Boggs Connersville IN

    3. Hi, Penny - I'm working on the first email you send. You shouldn't go to any cemetery alone. You should tell someone where you are going. This is rule of thumb. Cemeterys are great places for the low lifes to do there business, but Benton Twp Police and Berrien Co. Sheriffs keep a good eye and there are only a couple of areas where you are out of sight of people. Crystal Springs is no different than any other cemetery I have been to, it is a large sectional, divided my a creek which is dry during the summer. There is usually staff out and about all the time, this is a very well maintained cemetery, and the sexton is very protective of the "personel" property. If you stop by the St. Joseph Public Library they have a copy of who is buried in Crystal Springs, but I don't believe it has been update since the early 1970s. And you can stop at the sexton office at the cemetery and get a map... they don't have the staff to help you find your family but if you ask for one most will be close by. -- On Sun, 3 Feb 2002 15:18:35 PRutz76365 wrote: >I am researching the Rutz family and alot of my family members are buried in >Crystal Springs cemetery. I isn't is the best of areas. But I have never had any trouble. It is a shame that things like that happen. I stop at the office and do not got to secluded areas alone. Besides who would want an old lady!!!!! I could take you to meet Mr. & Mrs. Rutz. They are the lovely couple we have talked about. It is Mr. Rutz family member that did that history. She is still living. Hope to meet you this summer. I will private mail you my phone..if I haven't given that to you in the past. Daundra

    1. Re: [MIBERRIE-L] Re: Roll Call - SMITH
    2. Hi, Bonnie. The only Smith I know about in the family (so far ;-) is the one you may have seen Daundra report a day ago or so: W.H. MURPHY -m- MARY ANN SMITH in Berrien Co. on Feb. 8, 1856. I was surprised to learn that they were married in Berrien County--I had presumed they married in Ohio (should never presume anything!) They are listed on their daughter's death certificate from Portland, Oregon, which also gives their birthplaces as Ohio. Their daughter's name was Eliza Jane Murphy. Other siblings of Eliza Jane as listed in her obituary were: Martha V. Bowen, Ed and M.D. Murphy all of Portland, Oregon; John Murphy of Buchanan, Michigan; Mrs. M. J. Claplin/Chaplin of Billings, Montana. Eliza Jane's marriage certificate lists her birthplace as "Painterville, Lake Township, Berrien Co., Mich.," and states that her residence at time of marriage was "Bridgman, Berrien Co., Mich." She married George David Montgomery from Buchanan, Berrien, Michigan. If any of these sound like they fit in with your Smiths or Murphys, let me know. I can provide a lot more on their descendants, but haven't gone back beyond William H. Murphy - Mary Ann Smith yet. I did a little bit of searching online in Ohio sources, but didn't find anything right off the bat. I figure they will take a minor miracle to track down with no additional information! Keep in touch, Kathy in Nebraska

    3. Hi Kathy! Thanks for your note. Who is the Smith you're looking for? Birthdate or marriage date? I've just started looking for my Smiths as I've just located the family of my "brickwall" William Wesley Smith b.1831 New York, d.1920 Minnesota. I knew he had some connection to Benton Harbor and Kalamazoo, but didn't know anything more until just recently. It seems his family came to Berrien Co. early (about 1838) and there were many of them (and they all stayed in the area). So I don't know a lot as yet, but would love to make a note of yours in case I find some connection. Thanks again for your note. I, too, have Murphys, but know nothing about them except they were from Co. Kerry, Ireland and settled in Washington Co., Wisconsin in the 1840s. Probably were also in NY at one time. Yes, there were too many of them to know if any are related to mine! 2. Did you know ... A geneologist is someone who calmly sets aside the birthday cards that have money enclosed, but then gets very excited when they open a card that contains a photo of a cemetery head stone that they haven't seen before! Steve PS - Is it too late to reserve a micro-film reader at the local library for April 1st ... when the 1930 Federal Census first becomes availble??? 8^)
