Thank you, Steve. Now I don't have to dig thru my references for the book title! That was my main goal this morning! This is the exact article to which I was referring. I had seen the actual book about 4 years ago at a friend's house when visiting in Saugatuck (my hometown). My father was one of the Gotham's of the fishing tug sinking in 1943. Incidentally, there is a museum in Saugatuck on the Mt. Baldhead side of the river that is doing a great exhibit of shipwrecks, etc. this summer. Hours are from 1-4 daily, in case anyone is interested.- Caroline From: <stevegerm@provide.net> To: <MIBERRIE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 02, 2002 20:23 Subject: Re: [MIBERRIE-L] Wilkinson CITY?? > The community of Lakeside (Chikaming Twp) was once > known as Wilkinson. > > "LAKESIDE, Berrien County: > John W., James, and Joseph WilkinOSn, brothers and > natives of Virginia, built a pier and a sawmill here > in 1854; when the Chicago & Western Michigan (now > Pere Marquette) Railroad came through in 1858, the > place was given a station named Wilkinson; because > of the alleged southern sympathies of the Wilkinsons > in the Civil War, it is said that the post office > department frowned on the name for its post office > and the name of Lake Side was adopted from its > location on Lake Michigan; John S. The community of Lakeside (Chikaming Twp) was once known as Wilkinson. "LAKESIDE, Berrien County: John W., James, and Joseph WilkinOSn, brothers and natives of Virginia, built a pier and a sawmill here in 1854; when the Chicago & Western Michigan (now Pere Marquette) Railroad came through in 1858, the place was given a station named Wilkinson; because of the alleged southern sympathies of the Wilkinsons in the Civil War, it is said that the post office department frowned on the name for its post office and the name of Lake Side was adopted from its location on Lake Michigan; John S. It is now known as Lakeside!!! But, many, many years ago, before the Civil War, it was Wilkinson City. The story behind the name change is a very interesting one involving the Wilkinson brothers and their sympathies for the South, so when a post office came into being or thereabouts, it became Lakeside. There is a good history of it in a book about the names of cities and towns in Michigan. Just a little history lesson from a retired teacher! - Caroline ----- Original Message ----- From: <BerrienCo@aol.com> To: <MIBERRIE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 02, 2002 12:23 Subject: [MIBERRIE-L] Wilkinson CITY?? > In a message dated 6/1/02 2:40:43 PM Eastern Daylight Time, > caroline@digitalexp.com writes: > > > > Steve-Thanks for your generous offer! Steve, Thanks for the look up!!! I believe that Omer White would be in Berrien Co. The common name of White has made research of this family very difficult. Thanks for helping. Looking for anyone who might remember a rather poor family that lived in Niles, MI. in the late 1940's - 1950's with the above name. Head of household was William CUMMINS/COMMINS and his wife was Jennie Mae. They had several children that were taken away from them due to their poor living conditions. Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated. Darla
Peg, I remember an elderly couple named TUTTLE who lived next door to my grandparents on Charles Ct. in Buchanan, Berrien, Michigan, back in the 1950s when I was a little girl. I've been trying to recall if I ever heard any first names, but I can't come up with any. They seemed like a very nice, but old and frail, couple. Probably means they were about my age now! Kathy, now in Nebraska
Steve, when you have time, would you check for Muth's? Also if there happens to be any Tuttle's. I don't think they were in Berrien Co. that early but as much as they moved around one never knows. Thanks for anything you might find. Peg
Steve, Could you please do a lookup for Marr, Marrs & Jones Thankyou Rick Covic

Steve, What a super offer! Would you please look up the STOUGHTON & BEDDO families in your 1860 plat map. You're great! Thanks so much, Mary
Steve, When it fits your schedule would you look up: Henry Lamberton J. W. (Jonathan) Roberson Alvah Kemp Omer White Thank you. Rita (robersonrj@aol.com)
I recently purchased a copy of an 1860 plat-map (reprinted in book form) that provides the names of land owners for Berrien, Cass, & Van Buren counties! The original plat-map was published in 1860 (prior to the U.S. Civil War!), and includes many "extras" (some business directories for the larger communities, "pictures" of some of the residences and businesses, etc.) I will do look-ups for anyone who is interested in finding ancestors in Berrien County. (Please note - at this time, I will not be able to provide you with scanned images of the plat-map pages ... only data in text format. Sorry!) Steve Germinder stevegerm@provide.net
