Catherine spoke Dutch because she was from the North Brabant province of the Netherlands. Several of her relatives also married into the Tacey family, which is why both French and Dutch were spoken openly in front of the kids. But just to be clear, Catherine was not from a French-speaking part of the Netherlands. Oirschot/Eindhoven is very much a Dutch-speaking area.
