I cannot find anything further on his death. Michigan does not have a death certificate and I've had no luck finding an obit for him. He lived on S Chilson St, west side of Bay City. His wife's name was Sarah and they immigrated from England in 1904. He was a coal miner in Bay City and in England. see my webpage: geocities.com/kayheath

I went to school with his daughter Kay and became friends for many years until she and her husband and kids moved to Charlotte, MI. Kay and I used to play "house" in the cemetery as there were many "houses" among the tombstones. If you've ever been there, you would know what I mean. Good luck on your search.

That sounds pretty traumatic--having to leave your house because of black diptheria? is that what they called it? I've heard of plain diptheria, but never before "black" diptheria. The relative in question died after 1920 but before 1930 (a broad range, but this is based on census records--and likely even died by 1925, because his widow remarried, had children, etc. by 1930) so I wonder if maybe he had the same thing that your mom recalled--the black diptheria. One of my aunts, a child in the '40s, recalled being quarantined for scarlet fever. Aren't we lucky to not have had to deal with that kind of thing. Thank you for the insight on the illness--I'll do some more checking, maybe your black dypheria is what this relative died from.

I also have a will of her's in which she left almost everything to my Grandfather Drane Wilkinson. But no one know's who she is? Do you know anything of this name?

Which I have several uncles who where coalminer's in Bay Co..What I do know is my mother had two brothers who died ;one in 1921 and one in 1923 of Black dypheria..They were buried the same day because of the spread here in Bay County. My mother remembers the family had to move out of the house they died in and a tent was put over the house. They believed this (the tent) who keep the plaque from spreading... I hope this helps you some...Kathy

I didn't know if it was tuberculosis, flu, or what. I just don't know what could make a body so contagious it could not be sent home for burial. From "MedicineNet.com" are some definitions for black lung disease: "a chronic occupational lung disease contracted by prolonged breathing of coal mine dust..a form of pneumoconiosis...has gone by many names incl. anthracosis, black lung, black spittle, coal worker's pneumoconiosis, miner's asthmas..." But I couldn't determine just how contagious it is, if it is. According to my relative, who wrote of the guy mentioned in my original posting, he was contagious and couldn't be sent to his home state for burial. But I don't know much about the serious illnesses to know what he had, exactly.

My g-grandfather was buried 8 August 1922, but we can find nothing more about his death. He was a coal miner. I've wondered about not finding data anywhere and thought maybe he died somewhere else sometime before his burial. Your message has me wondering about the Coal Miner Epidemic. Could he have been contagious and that somehow effected the time of his burial?
