John was born in Bedwas. Originally this line of Cobley's came from Pennsford, Somerset in the south of England. They moved to Wales in the early 1800s for the coal mining jobs. At least three of John's brothers emigrated to the US and all worked in coal mines here in different parts of the country. At least two of his brothers emigrated to Australia and worked in mines there, coal and gold.

John was b. 1861 Wales and died in Bay Co. 1948. He and Margaret had three sons William, Edward also known as Idris, Daniel and one dau. Hazel who died young. John worked in the coal mines in Bay County.
