From Philip Barber's obit. --Born March 6, 1829 d. May 23, 1910. M. Susan Depue, children Charles, Newell, Clayton, David, Fred and Ivy(who died in infancy) His father Alpheus, bought 80 acres from Leonard Slater, and this land passed to Philip "With the help of his parents he cared for an orphaned nephew, Benj. Slater, giving him a fathers love and care." He had three sisters, Maria, Jane, and Cynthia. One of them. According to "Pioneer Families of Barry County" by Joann Marshall Doster. George Leonard Slater b. Feb. 9, 1829 d.May 6 or 7, 1902, married his second wife Jane E. Barber, b.July 7, 1835 d. Oct. 27 1855. Ironically, no children of George L. and Jane E. are listed, but George if 14 in 1870 would have been born in 1855 or 1856 and Jane died in 1855.
