I have also found little info available on the lumbering industry in Barry County in that period. My 3rd great-grandfather, Albert S. Newton, was killed in a sawmill accident on 5 Mar 1879 at the sawmill he owned with his brother-in-law, Daniel Hook, in Dowling. Several years ago I tried to find out more about the accident by looking through the Hastings and Battle Creek papers and found nothing.
