It was first Utah Territory and later the State of Nevada. These herdsmen, including Bill Patterson, drove cattle from Stanislaus County, CA to Smith Valley on the West Walker River. Several men in the party were from Sandisfield, Mass. Molre Smiths than any other people were in the group, so the unnamed valley was first call Smith's Valley and later just Smith Valley, Nevada. Eventually there was a village there called Wellington. Can anyone help me find information on Bill Patterson, an orignal cattle drover into the Smith Valley area? Thank you for any help.
