Rathbun, 91, of Lake Odessa passed away Thursday, May 8, 1997 at the Thornapple Manor in Hastings. She was born September 25, 1905 in Odessa Township, the daughter of Seward and Lelah (McDiarmid) VanHouten. She graduated from Lake Odessa High School in 1923 and then attended Western Michigan University and Michigan State University where she received her B.A. Degree in Education. She taught in rural elementary schools several years in Ionia, Barry and Eaton Counties, retiring in 1960. She married Maurice Rathbun on June 6, 1937. He passed away on May 17, 1971. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Opal Bartlett. Mrs. Rathbun is survived by one daughter, Marilyn Rathbun of Lake Odessa; one grandson, Jeff Ridley of Miami, Florida; one great grandson, Shawn; one stepbrother, Bernard (Gladys) Dailey of Lake Odessa; one sister-in-law, Maudaline Majinska of Lake Odessa; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, May 12, 1997 at the K! oops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa with Rev. George Schreckengost and John Waite officiating. Burial took place at Lakeside Cemetery.
