Miller, 95, of Hastings, a retired businessman, died Monday, Aug 19, 1996, in Thornapple Manor, Hastings. He was born Dec, 18, 1900, in Assyria Township to Arthur and Olive (Case) Miller. He was raised in Assyria Township and moved to Hastings in 1943 from his farm and joined George Miller in the Miller Real Estate business in 1945. He became full owner of the business in 1950 and retired in 1970. He also had been employed in farming, carpentry and cement work, was a lumberyard worker and worked at Eaton Corp. in Battle Creek during WWII. [He helped build the 1st house that his son (Kenneth) and wife set up housekeeping in. He also helped build an upper story addition on his son's summer cottage] He married Edith M. Smith on Aug. 3, 1920. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Kenneth D. Miller of Hastings; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Floyd Miller of Hastings. He was preceded in death by a son, Claude Miller i 1984; brothers, Orlie and Glen Miller; and sisters, Nettie LeClear and Anna Davis. His community involvement and hobbies: Past elder of First Presbyterian Church, Hastings. Longtime member of Hastings Kiwanis Club. Avid reader and traveler. Burial at Riverside Cemetery, Hastings. Grandson (David Miller) remembers his Grandfather as an accomplished woodsman and farmer. "I recall walks in the woods with Grandpa. Along the walk he would identify every tree. He often delighted us by cutting a branch from a tree with his pocketknife and carving it into a whistle. Grandpa was very calm and loved to play checkers, putter in the workshop and pick all fruit-in-season. You could always count on Grandpa to fill your refrigerator with blueberries in the summer and apples in the fall.
