I'm not related to this person ... just passing along the info. "Nashville News," July 2, 1908, p. 2 Vane R. Smith, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert J. Smith, died early last Saturday morning at the home of his parents in the eastern part of the village, after an illness of several months. He was born July 13, 1891, and about two years ago he joined the U. S. navy, where he served until his health, which had been undermiend by an attack of pneumonia earlier in life, gave out and he was forced to return home. He was first stricken at Austin, Texas, and after being in the hospital for a time he seemed to improve and was again put into the service. A short time after this he was at San Antonio, Texas, where he collapsed on the streets and was again removed to a hospital. He recovered somewhat but it was seen by the physicians that he was gradually failing, and that the dread tubercular diabetes had developed, and in consequence he was discharged and sent home. Since coming home he has gradually failed until the end came to relieve his suffering. The funeral was held at the house Monday afternoon and the remains were laid to rest in Lakeview cemetery, Rev. O. C. Penticoff officiating. He is survived by two sisters and father and mother, who have the sympathy of the entire community.
