James was born August 10, 1928 in Recreation Park, to Ross and Celesta (Conkright) Powell. He was a lifelong resident of the Kalamazoo area, and lived in Delton since 1981. He loved to draw from a young age, and enjoyed all sports, playing baseball and football at WMU State High, graduating in 1946. After high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and began boxing, later becoming the Welterweight champion of the USMC Second Division. He was an avid bowler, bowling on many leagues throughout the years. He had a great love of hockey and was a dedicated Detroit Red Wings fan, rarely missing a game. Since 1963 he enjoyed the fellowship, "Friends of Bill W.," and many conversations were held with friends over coffee at his kitchen table. He had a great passion for art. He was a local sign painter and artist and is well known for his watercolors, oil pain! tings and murals. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing the harmonica, making music with his brothers and spending time with his granddaughter, Ariana. James is survived by his wife, Julie Powell; and their daughters, Celesta (Antonio), Laurel (Josh), and Erica. He is also survived by his sons, Mike (Julie) and Mark (Cheri); and his daughter, Lisa; as well as eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is survived by his brothers and sisters, Tom, Stan, Ruth (Jesse), Dick (Rosalinda), Carol (Jerry), Don (Eilene), Roger, Philip (Lillian), Mary (Don), Laurel (Ron), and Danny. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; and his sister Deloris; and his brother, Fred. On September 4, 2005 there will be a 5:00 p.m. Memorial Service at the Faith United Methodist Church in Delton, where Pastor Daniel Hoffman will officiate. A reception will follow at The Barn, behind the Blackhawk Bar and Grill, in Richland from 6-9:00 p.m. In lieu! of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of Greater Kalamazoo or t he Hospice of your choice.
