He was born on October 20, 1923 in Flint, the son of Andrew and Martha (Pettengill) Stevens. Mr. Stevens was a veteran of World War II and married Shirley Rogers in 1947, she died in 1981. He married Toles Donavan in 1988. He retired from Chevrolet Manufacturing in Flint in 1976 after 30 years of service. He was a lifetime member of Davison VFW Post #4087 and Hale VFW Post # 7345, serving in the color guard at both posts and at Hale American Legion Post #422. Mr. Stevens moved to Nashville in May 1995 and enjoyed hunting, fishing and oil painting. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; one son, Edward; two brothers, Melvin and Ivan and three sisters, Marvel Pollard, Gert Walsh and Helen Osborn. Mr. Stevens is survived by his wife, Toles; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Charles Mead of Nashville; son and daughter-in-law, Ken! neth and D'Joni Stevens of Washington; son, Michael Stevens of Nashville; eight grandchildren, Kim, Tammy, Amber, Jonathan, Krista, Pam, Laura and Karen; several great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, George and Thelma Stevens of Flint; sister-in-law, Belva Turner of Capac; several brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, May 16, 1997 at the Maple Valley Chapel-Genther Funeral Home, Nashville. Reverend Lester DeGroot officiated. Laura was born in Pigeon, on September 15, 1973. The family moved to Middleville in February 1978. Laura attended the Middleville pre-school and all her school years at Middleville Thornapple-Kellogg, graduating in 1991. She attended Michigan State University for one year before transferring to Lansing Community College to pursue her love of architectural drafting, obtaining an associates degree there in 1995. She was inducted into the Honorary academic fraternity of Phi Theta Kappa during the final term. While living in Lansing, she worked for a time at the Dancing Goat Coffee Shop where she met Dan Dickerson, a student at Cooley Law School. In the summer of 1995 they moved to Portland for three months while Dan took classes at Lewis & Clark Law School. They had just returned to Portland one week ago and w! ere still house hunting. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, John Converse and paternal uncle, Warren Converse. Laura is survived by her parents, Kyle and Sandra Converse and one brother, Steve, all of Middleville and her beloved Dan Dickerson of Orlando, Florida. Grandmother, Jeanne Converse, John and Margie Converse and cousins, Mason, Peter and Catherine, all of Union City. Also, cousins Brent Converse of Leland and Sara (Converse) Langshied of Hastings. Grandparents, George & Dorothy Dereere of Colorado Springs, Colorado and uncles & Cousins in Colorado Springs and Denver. Also, her very special Aunt Caroline Perry of Stratford, Connecticut. The immediate family went to Portland for funeral services there, a place Laura dearly loved. A memorial service will be held in Middleville soon. Mr. Wheeler was a United States Army Veteran serving from November 9, 1955 - November 8, 1957 then reenlisted on January 2, 1963 until his discharge on December 30, 1965. He married Evelyn Edward on March 1, 1958, marriage ending in divorce, but was reunited in 1995. He had moved to the Middleville area in the early 1950's and lived at the present address the past twelve years. Mr. Wheeler's employment included truck driving, construction, automobile mechanic and plumbing contractor. He was a member of Nashville V.F.W. Post, Caledonia American Legion Post and Woodland Eagles Lodge. Mr. Wheeler was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lester Wheeler. He is survived by his daughter and her fian! cee, Viola Farris and Terry Griffin of Allegan, two grandchildren, Kyle and Travis Farris; two brothers, William Wheeler of Tennessee and Edward Wheeler of Florida; three sisters, Rosemary Wilde of Saranac, Arbutus Drake of Middleville and Dodie Dunkelberger of Hastings; a special friend, Evelyn McWilliams of Hastings and many nieces and nephews. She co-owned and operated the former "Leslie's Barber and Beauty Shop" in Hastings for 15 years, retiring in 1940. Mrs. Benner was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her two husbands; her parents; one daughter, Geneva Leslie in 1974; one son, Rex Leslie in 1993 and two infant brothers. Mrs. Benner is survived by one ! son, Carl (Barbara) Benner of Hastings; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and two sisters, Mildred Benner and Wilma Story, both of Hastings. Mr. Rowley was born August 31, 1918 in Woodland, the son of Isaac & Louise (Hauer) Rowley. Blind from birth, he graduated from the Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing at the age of 19. In spite of his handicap, he approached life with a great vigor. He held a wide variety of jobs throughout the years, including door to door salesman, factory worker, Braille proof-reader, typist for Legal Aid and freelance writer, serving as a stringer reporter for the Battle Creek Enquirer and the United Press International. He authored several books on travel and Bible study and won numerous awards for his poetry, which often appeared in the Saturday Evening Post and the Readers Digest. He travelled to Mexico, Europe, Israel and all over the United States, writing of his adventures. A former resident of Hastings, he had resided in Battle Cr! eek for over 35 years and was a long time member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Battle Creek. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Norma Reuther of Kalamazoo; his nephew, Duane (Anne) Reuther of Woodland and his niece, Joanne (William) Musselman of Kalamazoo. Memorial services will be held Tuesday morning, May 13, 1997 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 26 Arbor, Battle Creek, with Reverend Cary Grant officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home and private interment will be held at Woodland Memorial Park, Woodland. Pleasant, Joan Black of Riverdale, Nancy Weslyn of Evart, Patricia Koch of California and Linda Rogers of Washington State; and two brothers, Keith Goldbecker of Washington State and Donald Goldbecker of Florida. She did Missionary work in Mexico and Texas, was a long time Hospice Volunteer, the local Red Cross Coordinator, and the local Crop Walk Coordinator. She enjoyed dancing, card playing, and her cat: Kit Kat. She was also preceded in death by her son, Jerry Smith, and a half sister, Myrtle Dymenstra. She was born September 25, 1905 in Odessa Township, the daughter of Seward and Lelah (McDiarmid) VanHouten. She graduated from Lake Odessa High School in 1923 and then attended Western Michigan University and Michigan State University where she received her B.A. Degree in Education. She taught in rural elementary schools several years in Ionia, Barry and Eaton Counties, retiring in 1960. She married Maurice Rathbun on June 6, 1937. He passed away on May 17, 1971. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Opal Bartlett. Mrs. Rathbun is survived by one daughter, Marilyn Rathbun of Lake Odessa; one grandson, Jeff Ridley of Miami, Florida; one great grandson, Shawn; one stepbrother, Bernard (Gladys) Dailey of Lake Odessa; one sister-in-law, Maudaline Majinska of Lake Odessa; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, May 12, 1997 at the K! oops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa with Rev. George Schreckengost and John Waite officiating. Burial took place at Lakeside Cemetery. He had lived in the Delton area since 1968. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Mr. Ridner was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Thomas and Andrew Ridner. They moved to Middleville in 1941 where she taught over 200 piano students. Mrs. Hooper was active in the Methodist Church Women's Group, Reading Club, Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Vernon J. Hooper. Mrs. Hooper is survived by her children, Winifred Jean (Andy) Ness of Falls Church, Virginia, Norma Jane (Harold) Humble of Grand Haven and Burton Jack (Alberta) Hooper of Middleville; eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. A memorial service was held on Sunday, May 4, 1997 at the Middleville United Methodist Church. Dr. Robert Smith and Reverend Lee Zachman officiated. Interment took place at Mt.
