She was born March 11, 1919 in Ann Arbor, and grew up in Manistee. After graduating from Manistee High School (1936) she enrolled in a pre-pharmacy program at Michigan State. While at MSU she met and married R. D. (Van) Van Deusen of Hillsdale. Shortly after WW II Ruth and Van moved their family to Solomons, Maryland, returning to Michigan in 1955 when Van accepted the directorship at the W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary near Hickory Corners. With her family grown Ruth worked in the Sanctuary bookstore and assisted in managing the office. As a child growing up on Lake Michigan, Ruth developed an enduring love of the water, enjoying swimming and sandy beaches. As an adolescent she was a talented pianist and sang in several Manistee church choirs. This love and appreciation of music continued throughout her life. Thanks to her mother and grandmother, Ruth was an avid and skilled knitter and enjoyed sharing this talent with ! her daughters. Always interested in travel, she enjoyed the world vicariously through friends and especially through her children, with whom she eventually traveled to the western US, Mexico, France and the Caribbean. She found particular delight in the numerous animals that came into her life-be it caring for the Sanctuary's injured and orphaned wildlife, sheltering an occasional stray cat, walking one of the many family dogs, riding her horses, or caring for her llamas. Her gentle, playful spirit and sense of humor served Ruth well to enrich her children and grandchildren with her sense of compassion and exploration of life. Mother and grandmother to a numerous brood, she truly took one of her own mother's favorite Biblical verses to heart: "Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not." Ruth is survived by her daughters, Joan M. (Dennis) West of Moscow, Idaho; Dana C. (Karl) Smith, and their sons, David M. Smith (and his daughter, Breanna Latterner) an! d Andrew W. Smith of Delton; Kathryn M. Lee and her son, David James L ee of Madison, Wisconsin; Laurie E. Van Deusen of Bellevue; sons, David H. (Gretchen) Van Deusen and their daughter, Jessica R.
