Corwin, deceased, was held in the home Tuesday afternoon at 2:00, Rev. N. P. Brown officiating. Obituary notice will be given later. [The Hastings Banner, May 8, 1919] OBITUARY Sarah Jane Stanton was born in Orange Co., New York, May 25, 1844, and died at her home in Delton, Saturday, April 26, 1919, aged 74 years, 11 months, and one day. When nine years of age she came to Michigan with her parents, who settled in Barry Township in Barry County. In 1860 she was married to Irwin Tenike, who later enlisted in the army and was killed in battle. To this union twin girls were born, Emeline, who died in infancy, and Mrs. Adeline Clark, who still survives her mother. November 28, 1865 she was again united in marriage to J. W. Corwin. Three sons and two daughters came to bless their home. William, the first born, was accidentally killed when only 9 years old, a shock from which his mother seemed never fully to recover. Charles and Edwin of Battle Creek; Mrs. Rose E. Sprague and Mrs. Estella Kelley, of Delton, are the remaining children. Six years ago they left the farm in Barry and moved to Delton, where two years later in March her husband died. She was confined to her bed for a number of weeks previous to her death. All that medical skill and tender care could provide was done, but was unavailing to bring about her recovery. She was a member of the First Spiritualist church of Battle Creek. She was a good woman, loved and respected by all who knew her. She leaves five children, a number of grandchildren, one brother, Calvin Stanton, and a sister, Mrs. Harriet Bailey, both of Cedar Creek, with many other friends and relatives who will mourn her loss. The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday, April 29th at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. N. P. Brown, pastor of the Methodist church. She was buried in the Cedar Creek cemetery. I'm trying to locate a paper known to me only as the Herald. My grandfather's (Guy Irving Church) letters from the Philippines were published in it in 1899/1900 and I'd like to get copies if any exist. The 1900 census shows his parents (Adelbert & Belle) living in Yankee Springs Twp, Barry Co. MI. Was there a Herald somewhere in the county? If so, are there any microfilm copies still in existance? We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted a link to information about the cemetery of the BARRY County Farm in Hastings township. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on MICHIGAN on the table of states. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. Scroll down to the bottom where we have the section on CEMETERIES. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
