From what I can tell, none of them are listed with a death in Alpena. I think, from reading your post, that you might actually want to start out posting to the Unknown Michigan board so that some people might be able to help you at a more general level. I would also suggest posting to the Oklahoma message boards and seeing if someone can help find the family near John's birth time - it will help you narrow down someone with such a common name later.
