Hi all! I wanted to round up all of the useful links I've been sent lately. Hopefully you can get as much use out of them as I can! A lot of genealogy is filling in the blanks. What were our ancestors lives like? What did they see, watch, smell, participate in? That's why I like a lot of these sorts of things. Pictures, "video", billboards - they give us an intimate shot at what life was like when we were not around. Sometimes things are for sale at some of these sites, but I use them not for "purchasing" but a way to really dig into the lives of our ancestors - in other words, look at people's greed as being a good reason these things are preserved for us to examine. http://gurukul.american.edu/heintze/postcards.htm 4th of July postcards http://www.billboardsofthepast.com/ Unfortunately, this is a "for sale" site, but the images of life in the 1940s-50s-60s are unforgettable. I highly doubt Remington shotguns would be allowed as a billboard these days! http://www.f1-grandprix.com/photos3.html The history of Formula One racing, with great photos from 1950-1969. My father, grandfather and greatgrandfather all shared a love of this kind of motoracing - and its these kind of intimate photos and memorances I love to add to my genealogy books. It makes it so much easier for the kids to understand if there are cool photos attached to it. http://www.firstworldwar.com/index.htm WWI Site aiming to cover the entire war. Very good essays, multimedia, maps - its still under construction, but very much worth a look if you had ancestors who fought in WWI http://www.vintagepostcards.com/catalog.htm Yes, another "for sale" site, but what makes this unique is it offers full views of the postcards, and postcards from not just the US but Canada, England, Italy, Japan, Russia, Mexico in a half billion different categories. Its worth checking out things like WWI propaganda from other countries. http://www.ww2incolor.com/ WWII was not only shot in black and white film, but color as well. This site aims to remind people about that. Yes, they have stuff "for sale" but the best part is the absolutely FREE image gallery with not only war stuff, but stuff from the homefront as well. Hopefully that occupies your time for awhile. Do you have any other useful sites? I'd love to hear about them!
