S. Dept. of Treasury, Steamboat Inspection Service, etc. -doc - (most op) -Namesakes series, Greenwood, John O. (ascending from 1900-09 volume) Freshwater Press, Cleveland,1975-87 Milwaukee Public Library Great Lakes Marine Collection is most helpful. They have a file on the ship: Title Interlaken. Publisher [Milwaukee, Wis. : Milwaukee Public Library, 1989] ITEM LOC CALL NO. STATUS Central Hum Marine Collection SHIP FILE REFERENCE USE LIB USE ONLY Description items in folder : ill., photos. ; 22 x 28 cm. Note Official no. : 100554. Wooden schooner built in 1893 at Algonac, Mich. by Abram Smith for A.W. Comstock, Alpena, Mich. On Oct. 10, 1934, she stranded at White Lake Harbor, Mich. Subject 100554. Interlaken (Ship) Shipwrecks -- Michigan -- White Lake Harbor. Add author Smith, Abram. Comstock, A. W. Unfortunately, they're not able to loan the file out but if you're in the area, you should stop by. You might also want to try the Northern Shipwrecks Database, http://www.northernmaritimeresearch.com/wreckrequest.html For a small fee, they will research the ship and the information, since the Interlaken was wrecked. Also, if you're looking for information on the original builder and owner, Abram Smith, he has a biography at http://www.hhpl.on.ca/GreatLakes/Documents/HGL2/default.asp?ID=s1089 . A W Comstock was one of his ships as well. If you're looking for information about the Comstock Brothers, that's something totally different. Andrew W Comstock didn't live in Alpena, he lived in Detroit, Michigan. Comstock Bros, the company he owned with his brother William B, was located at 221 North 2nd Street. They are listed in the 1899-1900 City Directory as being lumber manufacturers and ship owners. William did live in town at 145 S 1st. In 1894 I have Andrew as living at 712 Jefferson av in Detroit. And don't quote me on this, but if I remember correctly I read somewhere that Angus Smith sold his ship business to Andrew (Angus was Abram Smith's son). Anyway, that's all I can find for now. Since the Interlaken wasn't really a significant vessel, about the only thing I can suggest is that you could check the newspaper in White Lake from when it sank. Since both Andrew and the ship sank in different counties, it looks like you have some fun work ahead of you! Hope that helps! Concetta Franco Alpena County GenWeb Coordinator
