Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IFB.2ACE/1071.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I have a 1903 Plat Map for that area, and the Dafoe you're inquiring about was just about where my great grandmother's farm was. You're right about the Herron Road reference. And the Dafoe Post office would have moved to various farm houses, where the current Postmaster of sorts would have lived. But Dafoe was now basically where Herron Michigan is now. My father, Harlo Herron, lived with his parents on Herron Road (Fred and Myra Herron) and that farm is still there. It is across from the Catholic Church there. The area's name was changed to "Herron" when Fred Herron donated some of his farm land to the 'city' and they built 2 small city buildings there. The buildings still stand, although deteriorated severely. I understand they are thinking of renovating them. Fred did have that farm in the late 1800's, but my father born in 1898) did receive mail at the Dafoe address, even up to 1916. There is no evidence of an actual 'Dafoe' now. If you're looking to find an o! ld residence there, you might look at the 1903 plat map. What name would it have been under? Please answer me directly to my email address of myraherron1@msn.com.

I found Emerson on a county map of Alpena, and am pretty excited about it. Other names seem to fit this mystery perfectly, especially the Harrison Road right there by Emerson! My uncle says he was told that Joseph died "on Aunt Mabel's farm"...Mabel being Mrs. Harrison... My uncle did not know how Mabel was his aunt, but this leads me to believe that perhaps Mabel & her husband purchased the farm from Joseph or inherited it upon his death. The pieces of the puzzle are fitting! I also received an e-mail from someone stating that Dafoe is Herron, and I see a Herron Rd. near there, also. Thanks again for all your help! Stephanie

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IFB.2ACE/1071.1 Message Board Post: I did a quick google and found this website ... http://nelsonherron.tripod.com/family/alpena/placenames.htm Which mentions the following ... "One of the old stops which has survived is Dafoe, though it is now known as Emerson. Dafoe, located on the Hillman branch of the Detroit and Mackinac Railroad, was named in honor of Lemuel G. Dafoe who came to Alpena County from Canada in 1862 as a child of five. He taught school in Wilson Township, then took up the practice of law. Finally, he was elected Circuit Judge. Through the years this spot, now a small village with a growing residential area, has become associated with the name of a well-know farmer, Roy Emerson." I tried looking up Emerson, Michigan on Yahoo Maps but it resulted in a town in the Upper Peninsula. Enjoy.

I have an obit that states Joseph Rupinski's funeral took place in January, 1912 at St. Mary's in Alpena, Michigan and burial was in St. Augustine Cemetery. (His death record says he was buried in Alpena Catholic Cemetery.) Seems I have come across something else that indicates was a St. Augustine Church, also... Wonderring why his funeral would be at St. Mary's if there was a St. Augustine Church... Was there more than one Catholic cemetery in Alpena County in 1912? Any information would be greatly appreciated. THANKS! Stephanie
