Hi everyone! I know I've been kinda quiet for awhile, but I was busy updating several of my other sites. But I wanted to remind you to check out our lovely Alpena County GenWeb site - I've added more names from the 1897 directory, more pictures, and an article about the town of Alpena and life in the lumber camps. So have some fun and recheck the Alpena County GenWeb site! http://www.rootsweb.com/~mialpena Concetta Franco Alpena County GenWeb Coordinator __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/IFB.2ACE/1091 Message Board Post: Hi everyone! 1. USE THE SURNAME FUNCTION CORRECTLY. Only use surnames if they are actually quoted in the message. Not your name - but the subjects of your message. So if I was posting about John Hazelton Graves, I could put Graves into the surname box. Now, if I was posting about John and his wife Mary Jane (Bonner) Graves, I could put this entry into the surname box: Graves, Bonner This will enable anyone searching for Graves or Bonner to find my message. NO OTHER WAY WILL WORK. So don't use -, all caps, /, etc or anything other than the names. It will negate your entry and what you are trying to achieve. And if you put a boat name, business name, etc into the Surname box - it won't be there for long. As Administrator, I will change your subject to make it more appropriate. 2. DON'T DO EVERYTHING IN CAPS!!! This is considered on the 'Net to be shouting - no need to do so when we have so many interesting people running around here to help. Sometimes using it, like to draw attention to a surname, is a good thing as it draws attention to the entry. Use it everywhere, however, and the effect is negated. 3. Use classifications (the little drop-down box below your message and above the Surname box)! Here's a short tutorial on what to use for what message: Query - looking for any and all information available Bible - transcribed Bible entries Biography - a bio of your ancestor from somewhere Birth - a transcribed birth record Cemetery - transcribed cemetery records Census - transcribed census records Death - transcribed death records Immigration - transcribed immigration records Lookup - Looking for a specific piece of information, like an obituary, birth record or cemetery record *Must specifically state which record you want in your message or it will get changed* Marriage - transcribed marriage records Military - transcribed military records Obituary - transcribed obituary records Pension - transcribed pension records Will - transcribed wills 4. Don't post dates / full names / places of birth for living individuals. You never know what kind of creepy people are out there. 5. Please post information looking for adopters/adoptees on the Adoption board. Its just easier that way - the purpose of the Adoption board is too help in that area. Alpena's message board is mostly for finding more out about the past, rather than the "now". 6. I encourage you to repost an old query! Some people choose not to look through the older posts, and others have bad emails. Repost with your new email and people will be able to get ahold of you more easily! If you have any questions, feel free to email me (bigchipchipbabychip@yahoo.com). I'm always around, even if I don't answer your question right away. All of this will also be put into the Links and Announcements section for further review. Thanks - and Good Luck! Their second child, Brenda, was born in Pontiac in 1927. I'm hoping that they might have been married in Alpena county. Grace's parents were James William Miller and Lena Udivilla Jackson. Grace and her parents were all born in Massachusetts. As far as I know, William Camp was born in Hudsonville in 1897. Thanks so much. Sue

The family I am searching for is John and Frances Smith. He worked at the Alpena Leather Corp. There is a possibility that they adopted a 5 year-old boy in August 1922. If they did, he may be my mother's birth brother. We have had a difficult time finding him because the people in Lansing will not give us his adopted name.My mother is 86 years-old and he would be 88 years-old today. I have found their birth mother and birth father, have pictures of them, and know where they are buried. Also know circumstances that caused them to be placed for adoption. His birth date is September 10, 1916 in Kalamazoo, MI.
Hi! I was just reading an article today which gave some information about this movement in Northern Michigan, ca1898-1901. Does anyone have any more information, like the five other communities it spread to other than Alpena City? Thanks! Interlaken (Ship) Shipwrecks -- Michigan -- White Lake Harbor. Add author Smith, Abram. Comstock, A. W. Unfortunately, they're not able to loan the file out but if you're in the area, you should stop by. You might also want to try the Northern Shipwrecks Database, http://www.northernmaritimeresearch.com/wreckrequest.html For a small fee, they will research the ship and the information, since the Interlaken was wrecked. Also, if you're looking for information on the original builder and owner, Abram Smith, he has a biography at http://www.hhpl.on.ca/GreatLakes/Documents/HGL2/default.asp?ID=s1089 . A W Comstock was one of his ships as well. If you're looking for information about the Comstock Brothers, that's something totally different. Andrew W Comstock didn't live in Alpena, he lived in Detroit, Michigan. Comstock Bros, the company he owned with his brother William B, was located at 221 North 2nd Street. They are listed in the 1899-1900 City Directory as being lumber manufacturers and ship owners. William did live in town at 145 S 1st. In 1894 I have Andrew as living at 712 Jefferson av in Detroit. And don't quote me on this, but if I remember correctly I read somewhere that Angus Smith sold his ship business to Andrew (Angus was Abram Smith's son). Anyway, that's all I can find for now. Since the Interlaken wasn't really a significant vessel, about the only thing I can suggest is that you could check the newspaper in White Lake from when it sank. Since both Andrew and the ship sank in different counties, it looks like you have some fun work ahead of you! Hope that helps! Concetta Franco Alpena County GenWeb Coordinator
