I have a picture of the school where Beulah Mathena taught. It was called McPhee School, and it was the equivalent of a middle school. I lived a block from it, so never was late for school. You can even see Miss Mathena's office room in the picture. It's been gone for a long time, but I have 2 really nice pictures. I'll attach them to this. If it doesn't work, email me directly and I'll send them again. Her office is on the 2nd floor just above the porch, on the right side, with the 3 windows.
Ladies and Gentlemen, We've experienced a slowdown in news lately, it seems. I happened to be surfing eBay today, looking at this picture in particular: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=13705&item=6190800684&rd=1 (I have no idea who the seller is or anything else about the photo other than that its got really, really cute little puppies in it)... And it got me to thinking, why shouldn't we try to generate some traffic on our list? So for the rest of the month, feel free to respond to this message with our first theme: eBay finds. What have you found on eBay that relates to Alpena County? I continually find postcards - did your ancestor send one? Lets hear all about it! BUT, I'm at the source of a ton of information that's been put on film, and I think the Alpena marriages are on film. If you want, when I go to the Mormon library in Salt Lake City, I can try to see if I can find something for you. If you want me to, just write me at my email address directly, with names and approx dates, and I'll take a look for you. Then I can make copies if I find anything and email those to you as scans.

It's much easier, perhaps. Either go to or call the Alpena County Library in Alpena, and ask to speak to someone in the Michigan Room for assistance. They have City Directories, since from the 1800's. It may be that they could look in a year close to your parent's marriage, and find the Rev you noted. It may also have his denomination, since they all had the 'business' that each person was in.

I only have pictures of the store in Alpena. I just moved out to Utah from Alpena last Nov. I did nothing but research while I was there, and never got a chance to search for the store in Rogers City. I only found out about the fire from the ex mayor of Hillman. Would you like a picture of the store in Alpena? Actually, in Bob Haltiner's latest book, there are iterations of the store at 119-121 Chisholm in Alpena, and those are from me. I could email any one you want. I do have some others as well.

Ask to speak to someone in the Michigan Room. That is where they have all the obits. Ask if someone there can make copies and mail them to you. They may be able to do that for you for a charge. I remembered it as Mathena, but thought I just had it wrong as a child. I know the sexton for Evergreen Cemetery. He is a VERY nice man and will help you all he can. If necessary, I do have a copy of the layout of the cemetery. Get the location numbers and I could email you that copy so you can place them somewhat in the cemetery. As far as their deaths being older and hard to find, they DO have most of the newspapers in the library. I found a very old copy of one where it listed one of my ancestors' death. That is the ONLY notice of it. No records otherwise. You might have to offer a little $$ for someone at the gen society to get copies for you, but some of them will help. The library has a file of many many obits. I knew Beulah in the 1950's, so there should be a notice in that file, as well as for her sisters.

Yes, I think you are correct. I was finally able to find Beulah's obituary and she was a teacher there. When I called the local cemetery the gentleman who answered the phone had also been her student . So even though her grave was not listed in their computer system he was able to recall she was buried there. It was a stroke of luck because I found out that Beulah paid for the graves of her mother (my missing Ida May) and her mother's sister (another missing link in my search) both of whom were also buried in the local cemetery. Oddly enough, Ida May's husband and daughter, Mildred are buried under the name, Matheny. Ida May and Beulah are buried under the name Mathena. The obituary for Beulah states that she had a niece, Shirley Pierce and a foster-daughter, Rosemary Hillam both of whom I can not find further information on. I had asked the local newspaper about the obituaries for her mother and aunt, but they said they are too old to get them easily. Thank you for the email address. Maybe they can help me!

I've written a friend in Alpena to ask about that. If I find anything out, I'll certainly let you know. BTW, a member of the local genealogical society there has this email address: lasekd@alpenacc.net. She might be able to give you some information if you write her. If nothing else, she can direct you to whom to ask there. I'm from Alpena, so I know that you will be able to find something. And also, the library there has city directories for most of the years starting with the late 1800's. Maybe someone there can look in some that are for the years you think they were there. Everyone living in Alpena is listed.
Hi! I know things have been kinda slow lately. I expect it as people are able to get outside in the beautiful (albeit very hot) weather. But if you are stuck inside at work like I am, here's a bit of good news to cheer you up. To anyone with Canadian ancestors, this should be very exciting!
