Posted on: Alpena County, Mi Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mi/Alpena?read=423 Surname: Boulton, Pulford, Van Sipe ------------------------- I am not researching Johnston but my ancestors came early to Alpena & I have collected data. From "History of the Lake Huron Shore" p-224 Alpena Co. stated "James M. Johnston (no info on middle name) native of Canada, resident of Alpena since 1865, Carpenter by trade. 1875 purchased interest in Mill property, now owed by Brebner & Johnston, & has been a partner since." Also Alcona Co. section p-268 mentions a John Johnston. Lumbering business in Alcona 1865 ect. firm Johnston, Haynes & Co. John Johnston, Elijah Haynes, James Beard & F.H. Vanderburg all of the City of Port Huron, MI.In the spring of 1871 John sold out interest. No other info. From Evergreen Cemetery Book; Buriel James M.Johnston 17 June 1904 & Elizabeth E. Dec 26, 1927(both have headstones). Original section(C) 305. Also in that section; Johnston Frank B. 1877-1911 & Maybelle 1880-1858. I looked at death recrods Alpena but found none for James M. Johnston in June of 1904 so maybe died out of county. Vicki

James M. Johnston, born 10? March 1844 in Canada, died 17 June 1904 in Alpena. James married Sarah Elizabeth Pollard in Maine and with Isaak Brebner he purchased "Doan, Bingham and Hitchcock Co." in about 1870(?). I would like to find out where James is buried and what his middle name was. Secondly, I have some information on Thomas B. Johnston, born 16 June 1846, who worked at his brother's mill before settling in Hillman, Michigan. Thomas married Lucy Jane Kilborn and had four children. I would like to find out when Thomas passed away and where he is buried and what his middle name was. Finally, John L. Johnston, 6? april 1857-14 June 1897. John was born in Canada and married Mary Ann Dunn on 6 July 1882 in Uxbridge, Ontario. John passed away in Alpena County. I would like to find out where John was buried and what his middle name was. These middle names might preserve the maiden name of a grandmother and so they could be a clue to my family research. These brothers were sons of John Johnston and Margaret Tate who had come from County Derry in about 1836/37. John and Margaret had two children in Philadelphia and then in about 1840 they went north and settled in East Gwillimbury Township, York County, which was the part of Upper Canada/Canada West and is now of course Ontario. I would appreciate any help in finding anything about these fellows. I am descended from their older brother Benjamin Johnston. If you are interested in the research I have done on John and Margaret's family you can find my webpage at www.johnstongenealogy.com Thanks for now, Joe Johnston. --part1_8.453ad66.263ce337_boundary--

    3. Peggy, I looked at your post and then did a double take thinking that I had misread the state and county wrong. I subscribe to this list for the surnames of Hajduk and Szela which is my fathers' side. They are from the Posen area which is where my father was born. The other names are for my mothers' side. My mother was born in KY and Collins is a very prominent name. She was a Welch. (Grandparents were on the Collins side) Some of her Collins married Gibson. Please contact me if you would like to compare notes. In the meantime I hope you don't mind if I post your post on the Eastern KY. list that I belong to. Hope to hear from you soon. Semper Fi, Mary Ann Merritt. (The Merritt name also from Alpena as is Schneider for my husbands side) Surnames Researched: Hajduk,Welch, Collins, Litton, and Szela Proud member of the Women Marines Association Proud lister at [email protected]

    1. [MIALPENA-L] Klemmer/Habermehl
    2. cdugger
    3. I am trying to find any possible link to my grandmother's family. Jeannette Vivian Klemmer was born in Berlin, Ontario around 1880. She and her sisters, May? "Edith" Klemmer Samuels and Ethel "Irene" Klemmer Ulman and sold Alpena property in 1907 to a David Mulvena. It appears that they received this property upon the death of their mother which took place in Detroit. Irene's signature was notarized by an Alpena notary. Jeanette's and Edith's signatures were notarized by a Wayne County notary. "Irene's" death certificate says that she was born in Alpena on 30 Apr 1890. I will be checking the 1900 census as unfortunately the 1890 is non-existant, but there is a chance that they were in Detroit by that time. Father: Charles Klemmer Mother: Elizabeth Habermehl. Elizabeth's death certificate, (information supplied by "Irene") states that she was born in Canada on 24 Dec, 1849 and that she was 46 at time of death. As you can see, these don't add up. It also states that she had 5 children, so I am assuming that 2 died quite young. My mother remembers visiting some relatives in Alpena in the mid 30's and has a picture of the "Gehrke Club" in Alcona County. She remembers that it was a hunting club and that the Gehrkes were relatives, but has no clue as to the relationship. She thinks that Mrs. Gehrke was a teacher and there is an 85 year old man in the picture...she is quite positive about his age. There was a split in the family and my grandmother never talked about her sister, Irene, in fact, she never really talked about her family at all. As you can see, I am grasping at straws. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you Connie Dugger
