Hello Susan, I know a lot of families moved down from Ontario to the Hillman/Alpena area. My Rea family came from Leeds County, ONT to Hillman around 1880. I know some of the Hunt's were also in Leeds County, so they mustve known each other. I know 2 Rea's married the Hunt twins (b.1887) of Hillman. I can get you more exact info when I get home tonight. I will look for Mathews also. I have 2 Hillman history books with photos also. I will get back to you tonight ... that is if my 2 year old falls asleep on time. I have family still in Hillman and Alpena, so I can get info from the area if you need it. I would like to know if you can help me find anything to do with Rea's in Bastard twp, Leeds Co., ONT. I have census info from 1851 on, I am waiting for Johnstown Dist. census info on microfilm, I have found Land Abstracts which trace William F. Rea back to 1830 in Bastard and S.Crosby. I know he lived in Bastard before 1830 but can find no records. His children are James, William, Jane, and Margaret ... so any birth records would be helpful also. Thank you, Kevin Rea Cwllmsgrpnc@aol.com wrote: Dear List, I'm new to the list, posting my interests in a Robert MATHEWS (born @1815/6 Ireland) and his wife Hester HUNT (b 1822). Family history tells me that they emigrated to Alpena from Bentinck twp, Grey Co, Ontario to live with or near their son Robert. They would have emigrated just after 1881. There are no death records for Robert Sr or his wife Hester in Ontario. Robert Jr emigrated @1876, lived briefly on State St in Alpena, later moved to Hillman, and finally settled in Detroit @1905. Would anyone else on the list be connected to this Mathews family, or have suggestions for finding a burial place or obituary for Robert Sr and Hester? If I can help with any Ontario records in exchange, I'll certainly try. Regards from Ontario, Susan ==== MIALPENA Mailing List ==== Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finance Tax Center - File online. In searching my Portwine geneology last month, I was contacted by a person who is related to the McDonalds of Alpena. My grandfather, Henry Portwine, married Mary McDonald daughter of Angus McDonald. They resided in Alpelna, and raised eleven children. Mary Mcdonald Portwine died in 1915, so I know nothing of her or her family. I would appreciate any information that any of your family may have on her and her parents. Henry Portwine was the township supervisor for several terms in wilson township, and had several farms. All of Henry and Mary children have passed away now, so any information is important.
