This is a test of the Rootsweb lists I am on. It is also some information for the list administrator if they feel the list is not running as expected. And finally it is an attempt to get something posted to the list so Rootsweb does not turn the list off. The list admin should probably go to this page: http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ and try to set up a new mailman login, if not already done. If you do that you will probably get to this page eventually: https://mailinglists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/lists/setupmail Then you might want to sign up for this list: https://mailinglists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/search/Listowners But be warned, you will receive postings from that list almost every day. May 8 a day at times. Another option that I do not encourage is to turn the list over to me - at least temporarily. Again, I do not want that done if you are willing to keep the list. Mike Flannigan

I don't have Vol. III of Michigan Ghost Towns, however I have the book, Michigan Place Names by Walter Romig. This is what is says about Stephesn, Lapeer County: it was platted in 1871 and named for its proprietor, Henry Stephens, of the lumber firm of Stephens, Currier & Townsend; he got the Detroit & Bay City Railroad to build a branch line through it and it became a lumber boom town; Robert Stewart became its first postmaster on Feb. 28, 1872; the office was closed on July 31, 1883, but was restored from July 13, 1886, to April 8, 1887; it was also known as Fish Lake from its location by that body of water; now a ghost town. Hopeing somewhere in the world I will find someone who has a picture of Stephens Mill, a lumber camp located on Fish Lake in Mayfield Twp, Lapeer County. Any other info also appreciated.
Thanks for that information. Present day Calderwood is about 2.3 miles east of Bond Falls. By UP standards it would be considered a small town with a church, and perhaps a store for the nearby campers: http://terraserverusa.com/map.aspx?t=2&s=12&lon=-89.08421&lat=46.40951&opt=1 Agate is 4.5 miles to the north and quite a bit smaller: http://terraserverusa.com/map.aspx?t=2&s=12&lon=-89.07254&lat=46.47277&opt=1 Agate Falls is 1 mile NW of there. I don't know if Calderwood had an elementary school....she never said and I never asked her before she was deceased. One time, in the late 1980's she, my sister, and I took a trip to the area (it is about 10 or 11 hours from where I live) and my mom wanted to drive through the "town" of Calderwood, which, at that time! > was a ghost town, but, you could see some foundations. I think she pointed out more building sites, but those are the ones I remember. Anyway, I don't know much else about it. My mom and her friends used to walk from her farm to Bond Falls, so it is very close to that area. I don't know if Bond Falls was considered in Calderwood when it was a town, but I would guess it had to have been. If anyone know any more about Calderwood, I would be very interested. Thanks a lot. Vickie, I have the same Ghost Town book that you have. The only other information I have is from "Michigan Place Names" byWalter Romig. This is what it says: Calderwood, Ontonagon County: in the pine era of the 1880s, a group of Minnesota men organized a company for logging and sawmill operation, naming it the Calderwood Lumber Company; it was succeeded by the Mercer-de-Laittre Company mill here in Interior Township, but when the settlement was given a post office on Feb. 5, 1908, with Glenn McClatchie as its first postmaster, it was called Calderwood. (from PO archieves). Have you ever checked eBay for postcards of Calderwood? If anyone else knows of a Ghost Town in Michigan please write us with your story and the location of the town with any history you know. It's the pieces that make the puzzle complete. If anyone has old photographs of towns or current photos with buildings identified please see if a local genealogy or historical society would be interested in copies of them. I though it was now a State Park... -----Original Message----- From: Mark Sortzi [mailto:mark_sortzi@hotmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2008 12:52 PM To: mi-ghosttowns@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MI-GHOSTTOWNS] Port Crescent Michigan Hi, Nancy. Port Crescent is actually a nice little vacation town with a thriving downtown, a big marina, condos on Lake Huron etc. Not a ghost town at all. I'm looking for information about Residence of Port Crescent Michigan - not sure if this is a Ghost town but it's a Town that is no longer there....
Our family is interested in the ghost towns of "Huff" and "Axin". We live in Wisconsin but have ties to both the UP and lower peninsula of Michigan. Huff was located in Marquette and there are no remnants of the town, other than the foundation of the post office. My husband's great-grandfather, James Willard Huff, was postmaster of the town. It is now on private land. The town of Axin is located in Wexford County, Michigan. The postmaster was Axin Morgan, also a relative. Paula
