So do we lay down like dogs and let the governor's line item veto take away our library and all that it offers?!! I can't be there on Wednesday to make my stand for the library BUT I plan to be there on Tuesday and MY car will show the city of Lansing how I feel about our library! Kathy Londo Barnes My reply from the senator is below: Dear Kathy: Thank you for taking the time to write regarding the issue of the closing of the department of History, Arts, and Libraries as well as the restructuring of the Michigan Library and Historical Center. I know Libraries provide many useful services to the community including free computer access, newspapers, and other resources, especially for those facing economic uncertainty. I have read many letters and articles that tell of the concern that people are feeling and I wish there was a different answer for me to give. The legislature holds an incredible disadvantage when working to reverse the Governor's decision. The case, House Speaker v. Governor (1993) 506 N.W.2d 190, 443 Mich. 560, allows the governor to structure the various departments any way she chooses. Even if the legislator was to draft a budget to recreate HAL and keep the records at the library intact, the governor has the line item veto at her disposal. Please understand I feel as you do on this issue and have appreciated the suggestions I have received from a number of you. I consider it a privilege to be your state senator. Please feel free to write in the future. Sincerely, Alan L. Cropsey State Senator 33rd District
