another thing that makes it hard to find someone....is the spelling of the name... my line started out REIJNERSE back in the 1400s...and my name is RHYNDRESS he is my grtgrtgrtgrtgrandfather..... and in doing census search....i had one census where the father, his son, his daughter all spelled their name diff.... that is the reason for sound search...those that didn't know how to spell , the census taker would spell the best he could,....so now i have about 12 different spellings of my last name.....that's fun, trying to find someone.. just like right now i'm trying to find where my grtgrndmother died and when...i have her on the 1920 census with Jacob Clark as servant...her last married name was FOOT(E)..with an E according to marriage license.1908..that i have a copy of...she has a son that dropped down to Pontiac, Oakland, MI and a son that went to California... and we can't find her on the 1930 census....last known in West Branch, Ogemaw, MI Patsy --- On Mon, 7/27/09, John <circlescape@gmail.com> wrote: From: John <circlescape@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [MI-GENEALOGY] married names To: mi-genealogy@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, July 27, 2009, 11:35 AM Hi Shirley- I have come across that situation a few times and in almost all cases, yes, it meant that she was previously married. However, and I only figured this out after doing more in-depth searching..., in one circumstance the bride's father had died and her mother re-married. She used the step-father's surname like it was a previous marriage. In one census I had found all the children listed under the step-father's surname. That was why I couldn't find the family for that one census. If you look at the LDS site; search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start , you'll see that both Martha and Robert were each married once previously. The one that still puzzles me is the bride that used her sister's husband's name as HER father's name. I just wonder who filled out the application. SISU!
